shrouded.
#Athens #UrbanPhotography #RuinsOfAthens
Colour photo of a one-storey neoclassical house of the plainest kind falling into ruin. The pale ochre walls are patched and peeling, the simple dentated plasterwork fallen off in great chunks, but the roof tiles seem intact. The whole is draped ain white plastic mesh, a section which just under the window is torn and dangling.

Ruins of Athens: Mets

There’s a lot going on in this colour photo, but colour doesn’t really feature. It’s a detail from the door of an abandoned house. The textured, cloudy glass is broken. We’re close up on the white-painted decorative grillework. In the centre of the image, a solid little square, from which half circles emerge, one above and one below, mirroring each others curve, then turning right angled to a vertical bar. Behind this design, on the right, a wooden door is just in frame, with a grillework and glass window in a different pattern. A marble-clad narrow stair rises to the landing, where another grillework window is. The photo is framed so it is parallel to the vertical bar and just above the upper half circle of the grillework that dominates the image.

After Mondrian.
#Athens #UrbanPhotography #RuinsOfAthens
Colour photo of a wall where a building has been torn down, possibly two buildings. The impressions of the walls are bare dusty stone, painted plaster remaining where the walls were. The far end has two dark squares of red and blue and a white rectangle. It reminds me a bit of a painting by Piet Mondrian called Composition II in Red, Blue, and Yellow.

Another faded Athenian Modernist beauty for you, in Mets, uphill from the First Cemetery.

Colour photo of a two storey house painted pale yellow and reached by a flight of stairs from pavement level, with another flight of stairs rising diagonally up the facade from right to left to a porch landing. Flat-roofed and almost unadorned, it’s a cube, but with some of the grace notes of neoclassical architecture, white plaster trim, elegant but simple railings, darker paint accenting the high windows with wooden shutters, beautiful proportions. A concrete wall, dense with graffiti stands between it and the sidewalk below, in which olive trees are planted at intervals.

A shuttered and decaying, simple but elegant neoclassical building with an elevates basement (probably a kitchen) and a side gate. It’s a sort of dark yellow umber with pale green shutters and surrounded by newer buildings. Colour photo.

Colour photo. A one storey house probably from the first half of the 20th Century, surrounded by taller buildings. In frame, just the two shuttered front windows, the tops slightly curved, live lozenges or carton animal eyes. Frames and shutters painted white, now lightly boarded shut with planks. The rest of the façade has been painted dark reddish white and is scrawled with graffiti in yellow and white. Another broad strip of white just under the tiled roof is plaster, half fallen off. The roof is edged with ornamental terracotta tiles, or was - most of them are missing or broken. The building is between Patission and Acharnon, framed by a sort of well of four-storey apartment buildings.

Poster ghosts
#Athens #UrbanPhotography #RuinsOfAthens
Photograph: not really a ruin but a construction site. The shell of a building on Solonos St in Exarcheia. A window opening into a square bare white interior. Layers of posters have been peeled off the wall making a pale, torn, multicoloured surface, green and white and beige. Most torn remnants are illegible but one advertised the 32nd anti-racist something to do with maybe camping - my guess is a music festival.

Athens by night: door

Photo. An ornately carved late 19th century wooden door in close-up, the deep relief ornamentation charred and blistered and lightly spattered with paint, the brass fittings missing, the glass behind the curved wrought iron black with soot.

Athens by night: shadows and stairs
#Athens #UrbanPhotography #RuinsOfAthens
Colour photo. Looking through the gap in a rusted barrier at night towards the facade of a turn of the 20th Century building. Stone steps with wrought iron railings glint up to a side door. Starkly illuminated by streetlights casting strong shadows of railings and fence.

Close-up on the window of an abandoned, ruined house. Though facade and window frames are intact, even a bit of dusty glass remaining, the house is a roofless shell with fig trees growing inside. Another window across the greenery, still closed in a faded pink wall, and above and behind the missing roof, taller buildings loom. It’s the same ruin as the previous photo, the shutters.

Detail of a wrought iron door with glass. Both door and glass have been painted terra cotta. Pictured, a petal-like shape inside a square. The glass behind is broken, showing, in the darkness of the abandoned apartment building entrance, an out of focus window and a hint of staircase.

Ruins of Athens: summer cinema

#UrbanPhotography #Athens #RuinsOfAthens
An abandoned open air cinema near Plateia Attikis. There’s a low foyer tiled in gray and white (possibly marble) with a curtained window to the left, probably the box office. It’s set in a walldamp-stained wallpaper (wallpaper is unusual in Greece) and pain - a garden chair in the corner with some paint cans. The ceiling was plastered once, but shows a great patch of bare concrete. Beyond, an outdoor courtyard where the chairs would have been and about half the huge concrete cinema screen is in shot, just empty space in front where the chairs would have been, asphalt cracked with weeds growing through, and to the left some cars are parked under a sheet metal roof.

Old Athens: Mets
#AbandonedPlaces #RuinsOfAthens
An open kitchen window in an abandoned house. A marble slab under the window was the splash board for the sink - shallow, oval, also marble, below. Through the open window another window across can be seen, in the house next door, also abandoned. Flaking paint, dusty panes reflecting rough brickwork, debris in the sink.

I’m not the most adventurous of urban photographers, so I rarely get indoor images of the abandoned houses that fascinate me.

Through the open doorway of an abandoned house, a wooden stairway going up to the second storey on the left, lit by a broken window. On the right, the front hall stretches back, with door opening to a room on the right and one behind - glimpse of light, probably from broken back doors. Everything is beige and brown and shadow and golden light. On the ceiling, where the plaster has not fallen to reveal slats, a delicate neoclassical tracery with bold geometric borders, also brown. The upper edge of the right hand wall is bordered in similar decoration.
