Estonia tops global relocation ranking – a result unlikely to please the Kremlin
Estonia tops global relocation ranking – a result unlikely to please the Kremlin
A new index names the Baltic country the world’s most attractive destination for relocators, a result that sits uncomfortably with Russian narratives about the region Estonia has just been named the world’s best country to relocate to in the 2026 Rumavi Global Relocation Index, scoring 72.8 out of 100 and edging out Singapore, Malaysia and Portugal. The tiny Baltic nation led the ranking of 192 countries thanks to strong banking infrastructure, business opportunities, property rights for non-citizens, safety and digital services. It ranked first overall for families and second for entrepreneurs. In Europe, it sits firmly at the top of the list. Estonia 🇪🇪 Named Best Country in the World to Live in 2026 Index https://t.co/qF8uk5P7Zd — Marko Mihkelson 🇪🇪🇺🇦🇪🇺 (@markomihkelson) August 8, 2026 This success is no accident. Estonia joined the European Union in 2004 alongside Latvia and Lithuania. Within two decades it transformed itself into one of the most digitally advanced societies on the planet, pioneering e-Residency (allowing anyone to run an EU company online) and one of Europe’s first digital nomad visas. GDP per capita has roughly doubled Russia’s in nominal terms, life expectancy is higher, and human development and quality-of-life metrics consistently outpace those of its former imperial centre. Membership in the EU single market, NATO security guarantees and a deliberate focus on rule of law, low corruption and tech-friendly policy produced results that Soviet-era planners never achieved. Against this backdrop, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova’s remarks sound especially tone-deaf. In July 2025, marking the 85th anniversary of the establishment of the Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republics, she declared: “Despite the significant advantage of large-scale Soviet investments and subsidies, these nations have been reduced to Europe’s economic periphery today.” 💬 #Zakharova : July 21 marked 85 years since the establishment of the Latvian, Lithuanian, and Estonian SSR. Despite the significant advantage of large-scale Soviet investments and subsidies, these nations have been reduced to Europe’s economic periphery today. pic.twitter.com/ZjhFc5vMMF — MFA Russia 🇷🇺 (@mfa_russia) July 24, 2025 If topping a global relocation ranking, delivering higher living standards than Russia and building a functioning digital state amounts to becoming an “economic periphery,” one wonders what vocabulary Zakharova reserves for Russia itself. In the same ranking, Russia is ranked 121st out of 192 countries and territories.  The data tell a clearer story: the country that left the Estonia’s nominal GDP per capita now stands at roughly $35,000–38,000, with Lithuania close behind at around $33,000–36,500 and Latvia at approximately $27,000–29,000. Russia, by contrast, remains in the $15,000–18,500 range. The gap is equally clear in broader living-standards indicators: all three Baltic countries rank in the “very high” human development category and consistently outperform Russia on quality-of-life, governance and institutional metrics. What was once a shared Soviet starting point has diverged sharply – the Baltics have built prosperous, open, EU-integrated societies, while Russia has become an authoritarian state edging to dictatorship. Soviet system behind has pulled ahead of the one that still romanticises it. History, once again, appears unimpressed by official nostalgia – and disinformation. Caption: Estonia that was once part of the Soviet Union now enjoys Eurozone membership, an enviable reputation for its digital economy, low crime rates, access to nature and offers Digital Nomad visas and e-Residency, making it an easy place to apply to live in.
