Yes. "Rurality" is for many Americans just a costume they put on! bsky.app/profile/mike...

Add ‘red diesel’ to their lexicon of picturesque elements of English rurality.
Yuge day for American Bluesky, as many are getting their first experience of the quaint and traditional British rural pursuits, "dogging" and "flytipping"

Saw the term performative rurality used recently and it's so good

his basic ignorance of the subject is evident in that he equates country music with white rurality. not only does he appear unaware of the diversity of rural america, but he doesn’t seem to get that the principle audience for this stuff is suburban and exurban

One note about this, because I was curious: remarkably, the state-level explanatory power of Google searches for testosterone and Trump vote survives controls for education, income, and rurality.
I really love this chart. I'm guess that the correlation here (.85) is about as big as you would find for any other variable. Also, a less serious scholar than @tesler.bsky.social (namely me) would have made a crude Freudian reference to the slope of the line.

There’s this competitive discoursing that white men do whenever I write or opine about country music or rurality in general. It goes something like, “I bet you don’t even know REAL COUNTRY” and they mean like Merle Haggard or something and I laugh, deeply.

A lot of people who "are country" are just fans of country western music and other symbols, with no real connection to rurality
The same people who are terrified of city streets and subway cars but also love tractors and rodeos haven’t actually been near any of those in 25 years

My most woke opinion is that rurality inherently lends itself to bigotry because people are isolated and rarely have to be wound people like themselves - and the rural life is uniquely romanticized by white people

There is no more renewable resource in the United States than wrongheaded takes by writers who confidently use country music as a simple symbol of rurality without having a clue about the music or seemingly anything else. If only we could harness such empty pontificating as a fuel source...

I have had times where I lived fairly rural but my rurality doesn't come within an acre of spitting distance to Keezy's. Rural on the east half can't comprehend the scope of rurality on the west, and I for one have no desire to, no thank you
for the record I have no interest in fighting anybody about how rural anybody is, it's just that wow people sure do seem to want to fight me about it! and it's hilarious because the ones who want to fight literally never win. there's lots of people who could. it's just that they (and I) don't care

Nobody abandoned rurality
Those hypothetical neighbors became that way after being abandoned by every party but Fox fascists spotting an easy pickup. Urban attitudes / policies of open antipathy for rurals by dems led once-unionized rural pops to embrace maga grifters - via predominantly urban-bred programs btw

The fact that you think US liberalism is concentrated in big cities and rurality is the domain of Trump voters is a GIGANTIC tell here. One which I’m qwhite sure you’re colorblind too.

This shows up in my “self-identified rurality” video, where the peer-reviewed research finds that people who identify and behave as “rural” (regardless of where they actually live) experience higher rates of all kinds of sedentary-related disease
I think this is my underrated pet issue, that american transportation and roads and city planning is making us sick and unhealthy with aggregate more expensive healthcare outcomes
This happened to me when I went in for a routine checkup in Vegas. I told them I didn’t have a car and I just walk and bike everywhere, and they (1) looked at me like I was crazy and (2) told me I’m in the 99th percentile of non-sedentary behavior

"It was the first day of June...Every green was young, every pore was open...the landscape being all health and colour. God was palpably present in the country, and the devil had gone with the world to town."

"The team found that the greater the proportion of enslaved people in a county in 1860, the bigger the mortality gap between Black & white people in the 2010s, even after controlling for common factors tied to health inequalities, such as rurality or pop. density"

Leonard Campbell Tayor is an obscure name in the art market, but in the 1930s, he explored the gentle rurality of inter-war England with great sensitivity. His 'Restaurant Car,' (1936) recalls the days of silver service meals on British railways.

My phone just "corrected" the word "rurality" to "tiramisu," which is honestly pretty amazing.

“Aspirational rurality.” “Cowboy mythology.” Once again Leah Sottile hits it out of the park, and I feel like some of the insomniac thoughts I have found words.
If you can believe it, January 1, 2026 marks ten years since the armed takeover of Oregon’s Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. For Portland Monthly, I wrote about how the ensuing decade was dominated by anxious men and a culture of lawlessness.

oppose rurality in all its forms. a backward, tragic way of life. celebrate automation
NEW: Companies are already selling robots that pick fruit and vegetables and weed bots that can tell baby ragweed from baby carrots.

Corporations are trying to automate farming. Time for farming communities to come together to resist, writes journalist, organizer, and farmer @suzan63.bsky.social:

New schemes for fully robotic farming could push the last remaining farmers — and their communities — to fold.
