Monotropa uniflora/ghost pipe: a parasitic plant using a fungal intermediary, usually in the Russulaceae family, to sap food from where the host fungi are connected to photosynthetic trees. #fungifriends #fungi #mycology #naturephotography

Ghost pipe (Monotropa uniflora) may look like a fungus, but its actually an achlorophyllous parasitic plant. Interestingly, it doesn’t parasitize plants directly. Instead, it parasitizes ectomycorrhizal fungi (Russulaceae) associated with plant roots. #mushrooms

Ghost pipes (Montropa uniflora) I found on Camano Island, WA. This flowering plant doesn't contain #chlorophyll and cannot #photosynthesize, instead it is parasitic to #fungi in the family Russulaceae. They obtain nutrients from mycorrvhizae associated with photosynthesizing trees. #Fungi🍄 #Flowers

Excited to see Dendrocollybia racemosa in the Oakland Hills this week. This mushroom hedges it’s reproductive bet by making sexual spores in the gills of the cap and asexual spores on the branches on the stem. It parasitizes Russulaceae fungi and is having a very good year #mushrooms #Oakland #fungi

Collybia tuberosa fruiting from sclerotia, on an old blackening Russula. Found near Snoqualmie Pass with Yi-Min Wang, who verified its identity with DNA barcoding. C. cookei is similar but has yellow sclerotia - it also fruits from old Russulaceae

Lactarius resimus is a species of mushroom in the Russulaceae family. It has a cap which ranges from 4–15 cm in diameter, while its stalk has a length from 2–6 cm and a width of 1–3 cm in width. The mushroom is generally white, but stains yellow to orange.

In my homeland there are many mysteries and tales associated with mushrooms, this is connected with the way of eating in ancient times.

If you see a mushroom sitting in the crook of a branch in a tree, slowly drying out: that's squirrel behaviour!!!! In one pine plantation every tree was mushie storage

In my experience they especially love the Russulaceae

Thank you for blessing us with squirrels, Luke 🍄📷
I want you to know that squirrels eat mushrooms

The gnome #plant (Hemistomes congestum) is a rare myco-heterotroph native to North America's west coast; it siphons nutrients from Russulaceae #fungi through the mycorrhizal network. It doesn't photosynthesize, so it has no chlorophyll and therefore no green. #NativePlants #BloomScrolling #PNW 🌿

Monotropa uniflora, an achlorophyllus, mycoheteroptrophic plant that parisitizes species in the Russulaceae family.

Some people harvest these for tinctures; personally, I'm not a fan. The justification is dubious, and few studies can be found on what chemicals they contain.

Found these in the forest. They're called ghost plants or ghost pipes (Monotropa uniflora). They're flowers but they don't produce chlorophyll; instead their roots steal nutrients from mushrooms in the Russulaceae family.

across 104 plants & 21 populations of C. maculata. All fungi belonged to the Russulaceae, an ectomycorrhizal family. See:

There are light & dark color variants of the plant, but both share the same spotted lip.

Млечник голубой (лат. Lactarius indigo) — вид грибов рода Млечник (Lactarius) семейства Сыроежковые (Russulaceae).

Шляпка диаметром 5–15 см, джинсово-синего цвета, зонистая, сначала выпуклая, затем становится вдавленной и даже воронковидной.
В молодости край шляпки подвёрнут вниз.
