Hop on the JR train to Hanazono, walk up through the Myoshin-ji temple precinct, and enter Ryoan-ji for 0800 (0830 Dec-Feb).
You'd probably make Ninna-ji before it gets too busy, and then you can head back to the Myoshin-ji temple complex for the rest of your morning.

It's Japan's most famous karesansui, and it's one of the few famous destinations in Kyoto that I actually recommend people visit — first thing in the morning, before the tour bus hordes arrive.

I even think the morning light at Ryoan-ji, with the tree shadows falling on the karesansui, and the sunlight on your face as you sit contemplating, is one of the most beautiful and tranquil Kyoto moments you can have.

#Kyoto with my 83-year-old mother, 2024, day two! We started off at the incredible #Ryoan-ji, often called the pinnacle of Japanese #karesansui (what we might call zen gravel garden) design.

For 20+ minutes until the first tour bus passengers arrive at the rock garden at least. Getting a room walking distance from Ryoan-ji is also an idea. Around Kitano Hakubaicho Station is not a bad part of town to be in as far as bus connections east and south are concerned. Or supermarkets etc.

Gion area is quite walkable and teeming with temples and shrines. But they have had tourist issues in recent years so access might be restricted. Ryōan-ji is also near Kinkaku-ji the golden temple so both together are a good day out.

These squalls, filled with window-rattling thunder and ferocious gusts of wind, are usually gone within a few minutes, but it makes for a boisterous tea ceremony!

I think there should be a rule that, for all such gardens, one must never be able to see all items in the garden from any point
