I met Francis Carr, then one of the three remaining Shakers, at a Sacred Harp singing at Sabbathday Lake in 2012, and it was one of those moments— mostly involving other monastics— when I was aware of being in the presence of someone with a profound, constitutive relationship to the divine

Brother Arnold joined in '78, and I believe there's been at least one other sister who joined and left since then

please consider this photograph of Jonathan Berger’s An Introduction to Nameless Love-Untitled (Brother Arnold Hadd, with Sarah Workneh) to be an invitation to go see it in person. I chatted with the gallery attendant protecting it from enthusiastic toddlers about how delicate it is.

Ooo, this is a new one for me! I've seen most of the New England sites, still need to get to Sabbathday Lake

Welp, three Shakers is still preferable to any number of Christian Nationalists.

The number of Shakers in the U.S. rises to 3
And until a few months ago, there were only two members left at the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village. Now a third has joined the celibate Christian sect.

So disappointed to discover this wasn’t more stories like the 4th-to-last Shaker. Reporter Stacy Chase came to Sabbathday Lake, wrote hornily about Shaker life & Brother Wayne, then he denounced his religion to run away with her in 2006

But as I said, the Sabbathday faithful’s position to the best of my understanding has always been that the doors will stay open till the last Shaker dies.

The story is complicated, but one speculation as to what happened is (a) Brother Ted Johnson shows up at Sabbathday (b) The elders at Canterbury flip because think (falsely) that Brother Ted is into Shakerism for materialistic reasons… 1/2.
August 20, 2025 at 3:23 AM
This is actually correct: the elders at Canterbury (when Canterbury was still running) declared that the Shaker Order was closed. The Community at Sabbathday Lake never accepted that decision, and has continued to keep its doors open to new members.
I don't know that they've ever been officially closed, tbh

there was a scandál a while back when one of the sisters ran off with a journalist, iirc? but every time I visited there was discussion of how they were due for a membership revival
