#SB607
Stu is claims that SB607 will "emasculate" CEQA, which is, quite frankly, *extremely* funny phrasing
March 22, 2025 at 6:54 PM
The 2025 legislative session is one for the record books. We finally won two longtime housing moonshots — a clean infill housing exemption to CEQA (AB609/SB607) and a statewide transit upzoning (SB79).

It's a new day in California. @cayimby.bsky.social @yimbyaction.bsky.social @sacyimby.bsky.social

Alright, we're done with the SB79 conversation!

We're moving onto SB607, a bill by Scott Wiener to reform CEQA, the California Environmental Quality Act, to make it easier to build infill housing.
March 22, 2025 at 6:45 PM
Venskus says she has union clients who are looking to run a replacement bill that would compete with SB79, SB607, and AB609 to run against those bills.

She urges everyone to oppose SB607 and SB609 and urges people to focus on stopping them.

Presenting on SB607 is Stu Flashman an "environmental" attorney best known for suing to stop high speed rail on behalf of the ultrawealthy Bay Area suburb of Atherton.

He says the bill would exempt housing element zoning changes from CEQA. Terrible!

Stu Flashman, an attorney best known for using CEQA to sue infill housing projects and high speed rail on behalf of Atherton.

Stu says that SB607 would "lobotomize" CEQA, make it "useless," and that housing developers will be "jumping up and down with joy."

Napa County Supervisors Anne Cottrell and Liz Alessio lay out the case for SB 607 and CEQA reform by telling the story of a much-needed childcare facility that opponents nearly killed by abusing CEQA
California environmental law nearly killed a childcare facility in our community. Enough is enough
Why does CEQA give a few individuals de facto veto power over a project that a majority of the community wants and needs? SB607 would finally change that.

Stu says their strategy needs to be going to Democratic leadership and telling them that passing SB607 and AB609 will destroy the Democratic Party in California because it will show Democrats don't care about the environment.
May 17, 2025 at 5:51 PM
Next up is Sabrina Venskus, who introduces herself as a CEQA attorney. Says there's two bills she's very concerned about: SB607 and SB609. Says they're the worst bills on CEQA she's ever seen in litigating CEQA cases for over 20 years.

Oops, got it mixed up. Also I don’t see the CA YIMBY page on sb607 anymore?
May 23, 2025 at 7:04 PM
Chris Legras from LA is speaking now. He says that he's talked with Republican NIMBY Senator Kelly Seyarto, who says that he thinks all the Democrats are ultimately going to fall in line and vote for SB607 and SB79 due to Newsom's influence.
May 17, 2025 at 6:41 PM
Stu says that this (SB607) is the worst bill he's seen in the last 10 years.

Rick Hall says this will nearly wipe out CEQA, and that Livable California is "very concerned" about the environment.

Combined with SB79, these are the worst bills of the year, per Rick.

SB607? That was punted to the budget negotiations
May 23, 2025 at 6:58 PM
Someone asks why Durazo let SB79 and SB607 out of her committee after they had such good conversations with her office.

Flashman and Hall clarify that she didn't, it was voted out without her support, that YIMBYs were too powerful for her to stop it.
May 17, 2025 at 6:55 PM
Legras makes the (insane) claim that the reason Newsom expressed support for SB607 and AB609 is because the bills are flagging, and they needed extra support.

He says that this is proof that Livable California et al are effective, and need to keep fighting.

I asked about critiques of #SB607. @cselmendorf.bsky.social answered.

The bill reforms the California Environmental Quality Act ( #CEQA ) to speed approvals for environmentally friendly and environmentally neutral projects...
@cselmendorf.bsky.social, any thoughts on Ethan‘s critique of SB 607? Does it really add a “a new, untested standard of review for when a lead agency decides to do an EIR” that will lead to more litigation than the status quo?

#SB607 makes it harder for Californians to challenge polluting projects. It limits environmental review and silences public input.

Join us in calling on senators Mike McGuire and Anna Caballero to vote NO on this pro-developer bill. As Trump weakens enviro protections, CA should strengthen CEQA.
May 23, 2025 at 12:18 AM
“To file suit under today’s #CEQA, opponents of the childcare center expansion didn’t need to provide any actual evidence that the project would have a significant environmental impact — it was enough to assert that such impacts could happen.”

Pass #SB607

Let's get CEQA working as intended-- preserving what works & reforming the parts that are too often weaponized to block bus lanes, climate smart housing, & green energy projects. Thank you @scottwiener.bsky.social for your leadership and excited for @prosperityca.bsky.social to co-sponsoring SB607.
I introduced CEQA legislation (SB 607) to avoid CEQA being used to stop new housing & make other smart changes to aspects of CEQA that turn it into a process nightmare that doesn’t always help the environment.

SB 607 will help create abundance of the things that make life better & more affordable:🧵

CA is an enviro leader because of #CEQA. We consider GHGs & environmental harms before saying YES to a project. But under @scottwiener.bsky.social 's #SB607, #CEQA will be watered down. Read more as bill heads to Senate approps.

Looks like this includes AB609 and SB607, which based on this podcast seems good? I am uninformed on the rest.
