My bill SB749 to ban the sale of assault weapons and reduce the danger of mass shootings in Virginia just passed the Senate on a party line vote.

My statement on the Department of Justice's complaint against SB749:
July 2, 2026 at 12:16 PM
Virginia just passed an assault weapons ban, sending it to Governor Spanberger — who has said she’ll sign it. The law would prohibit the sale, transfer, and manufacture of semi-automatic centerfire rifles and high-capacity magazines starting July 1.
SB749: Assault firearms & certain ammunition feeding devices; purchase, sale, etc., prohibited, penalties.

“The Department of Justice’s lawsuit is the predictable attempt by the national gun industry to freeze progress, but it does not change why SB749 was passed: to save lives and protect our communities from weapons of war." - @salimforva.bsky.social bluevirginia.us/2026/07/hour...

My bill SB749 to ban the sale of Assault Weapons will be voted on today. When I ran for the State Senate, I campaigned on this, and I promised that we would make real change in my first term. Together, we will get this to the Governor's desk.

Today @abigailspanberger.com signed SB749, my bill to ban the sale of assault weapons starting July 1. This is a policy I ran on - and together, we delivered!

Gov Northam said "if we can't change their minds, we have to change their seats," and this senator @salimvasenate.bsky.social did just that, defeating his predecessor whose vote prevented this assault weapon ban from passing on this very floor in 2020.

It passes the Senate today.

The snow and ice couldn’t stop us from hearing several gun safety bills this AM in Courts of Justice committee. I’m proud to co-patron @salimvasenate.bsky.social’s SB749 that prohibits high capacity assault firearms. The time for sensible gun control is now.

@salimvasenate.bsky.social Hi Senator - I'm a constituent and have voted for you both in the primary and general in the past. I have some serious concerns about SB749 - especially with today's modifications to the bill. I think its overly restrictive and criminalizes Virginians - happy to discuss
January 26, 2026 at 9:29 PM
Respectfully - meanwhile you're aiming to pass legislation that would make the majority of Virginia gun owners guilty of a class 1 misdemeanor. As a transgender, lifelong Virginian invested in keeping herself safe, I politely suggest you're making the wrong move on SB749. We are not California.

New draft of @salimvasenate.bsky.social/ @helmerva.bsky.social assault weapon ban:
⏺️ legal if currently owned or bought legally in future
⏺️ rounds incr to >15
⏺️ legal to sell to FFA; inter-FFA transfer (to outside VA) ok
⏺️ transfer to immediate family ok
⏺️ does NOT criminalize possession
February 27, 2026 at 1:34 PM
VA Dems are trying to criminalize owning most firearms with SB749, which in another time is something I'd agree with.

However, we're currently in the middle of a fascist takeover.

Call your delegates and senators. Go here to find out who that is:

I want to add that SB351, SB352, and SB783 are GREAT and we need more of that energy.

But SB749 is NOT right for Virginia or Virginians.
There are common sense approaches we can take to reduce gun violence - restricting the 2A rights of Virginians and criminalizing law abiding owners it not one.
January 26, 2026 at 10:16 PM
The Virginia Senate has agreed to Governor Spanberger's changes to SB727, which aligns the definition of "assault firearm" with SB749.

But they also "passed by" Spanberger's changes to the definition of "assault firearm" in SB749.
