Amid concurrence and disagreement over various issues, SBSTTA28 ends in Nairobi ahead of CBD COP17 in Yerevan
The six-day-long 28th meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice or SBSTTA 28 came to an end in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi on August 1, 2026, with consensus as well disagreements over a range of issues concerning global progress on biodiversity. The SBSTTA is the science advisory group for the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, the main global treaty on protecting nature. The meeting, which began on July 27, was tasked with giving countries science-based, practical advice to speed up action on biodiversity goals. It took place ahead of the pivotal 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) to CBD. COP17, which will take place in Yerevan, Armenia, from October 19-30, will decide on action for nature and reviewing global progress. The meeting’s chair, Jean Bruno Mikissa from Gabon, said this gathering matters a lot right now. Back in 2022, countries agreed on a plan called the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework or KMGBF. It set 23 goals that the world needs to reach by 2030, like protecting more land and ocean, and stopping species from going extinct. “#SBSTTA28 has just concluded its work. Parties to the CBD have made important progress on key scientific and...

Synthetic biology is one of the most rapidly evolving areas of bioscience and technology. At #SBSTTA28 a side-event dedicated to capacity-building on #SynBio highlighted the need to ensure that all Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity can engage in a safe, informed and equitable manner.

The targets were adopted in 2022, and 2026 marks the mid-point since then. The current convening is significant in that SBSTTA 28 and SBI 7 will consider the findings of the global midterm review of the GBF.

Global Guidance on Wildlife Management Must Not Enable Exploitative Practices
“Nairobi is about to host a meeting that flies under the radar for most people, yet its recommendations could shape how the world treats wild animals for years to come,” writes Jewel Omollo, Environmental Policy Officer, World Federation for Animals. — By Jewel Omollo This week, governments, scientists, and observers are gathering in Nairobi for the 28th meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA-28) – a technical, scientific, and technological body of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). In policy circles, this is where the “expert” recommendations get refined before being sent onward to the political stage at the Conference of the Parties (COP), the decision-making body of the CBD. In practice, however, what is agreed at SBSTTA can quietly become the blueprint for laws, funding, and programs far beyond the conference room. One of the central issues on the agenda is the development of the first CBD-wide global guidance on the sustainable management of wildlife across multiple species and practices. It is being developed by the CBD, in collaboration with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild...
