#SDLT
How much stamp duty/SDLT was due?

That depends.

Good Resolution Foundation piece that makes a similar argument to my @ippr.org one. Who would win and lose from a proportional property tax replacing council tax and SDLT can be seen here.

Sort of but we don’t tax property proportionally so only on transfer (SDLT and IHT) which means we’re taxing a subsample of that wealth that may or may not be representative.

Can we get a campaign going #FarageResign for lying about paying the right SDLT tax on his house purchase!

He said his partner bought her first house at £885k & those SDLT taxes would be £34,250

If Farage supplied the money, if he bought a 2nd home, the tax is £78,500 tax

Aaronson says that the actual facts demonstrated that Ms Rayner *had* been given definitive advice there was no higher rate SDLT charge, without a caveat.
May 14, 2026 at 5:14 PM
LBC are saying Rayner did triple check her SDLT position. One Conveyancer. Two Tax Experts. Well I said she should triple check. And it appears she did.

... and the current very high rates of SDLT have all-but-frozen high value property transactions.

That's bad for everyone.

So, whatever your view of redistributive taxation, you should support the abolition of SDLT for *everyone*, including the very wealthy.

So no, HMRC aren't the bad guy here.

But there is a legitimate question as to why they are chasing landlords for SDLT they may have accidentally incurred as a result of being sold a scheme sold by shysters. Shouldn't they first chase the shysters?

even for a non-first time buyer, where the impact is heavier, it's still outdone by deposit and mortgage.

at £300k, SDLT is £5k, deposit perhaps £30k, mortgage perhaps £16k a year

at £500k, SDLT is £15k, deposit let's say £50k, mortgage over £25k a year

Payment of taxes provides money for services and our country. Whether it’s income tax, VAT or SDLT. MPs are responsible for laws that govern what is paid/spent.

Don’t underestimate the anger of the law abiding, tax paying public against any MP that abuses it including Farage

SDLT lowers property prices! even those tax boffins agree that cutting SDLT would lead to higher property prices!

the idea SDLT stops retirees downsizing is, to put it extremely generously, "theoretical"

These errors suggest that Mr Gimple and Chancery Law & Tax lack a basic understanding of SDLT.

We have three taxes on property: stamp duty (SDLT), council tax and business rates. They're bad taxes: they're unpopular, inequitable, and they hold back growth.

- I'd probably also cut stamp duty a bit. I'm probably the biggest defender of SDLT you'll find, but the tax bite in the £500k-£925k range is probably a bit steep atm. play around with the thresholds and rates to soften it

This isn't a one-off mistake. The guide says "qualifying businesses are not typically subject to SDLT".

A serious error. In *all* cases where an individual is incorporating, there will be an up-front SDLT charge - potentially a very high one given current rates.

Kind of amazing, given how bad SDLT is, that SDLT holidays are even worse.
July 9, 2025 at 10:24 AM
I've seen you comment (on the other place) that if Rayner asked her solicitor about SDLT and trusts she was "naïve" for expecting them to know, and they'd be wrong to advise. I don't think it's wrong to expect you can trust your solicitor's advice! Their competence (or otherwise) is another matter
