Selnec Northern : Rochdale District time table : January 1971 : Selnec Northern Bus Company : SELNEC Passenger Transport Executive : 1972. The cover to the January 1972 bus timetables for my old hometown; Rochdale. The borough's municipal transport department had been passed to the newly formed Selnec PTE upon its formation in 1969 and made its mark by adopting a striking orange livery that would pass to Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive when it was formed in 1974 as part of local government reorganisation. The cover shows the Selnec Northern logo & lettering and a magenta panel, with an orange liveried single deck bus facing right and double deck left - the title Time Table in white in between. Dates and Price - 5p - in black at lower edge. The 'lazy S' logo is depicted here in the colour adopted for the Northern division that included the Bolton, Bury, Ramsbottom, Leigh and Rochdale operations. Selnec - South Lancashire and North East Cheshire, the planned name for what was to mostly become Greater Manchester - also had a Central division, comprising the Manchester and Salford operations, and Southern division that included Ashton, Oldham, the Stalybridge, Hyde, Mossley and Dukinfield area and Stockport.

For the pink and orange, are we talking M100 Y60 versus M60 Y100 (or similar), or are they actual specials?

I’ve never really taken the time to examine the ‘Lazy S‘ Selnec logotype but it’s rather spectacular in all its mid-twentieth century italic glory

A leaflet cover in pink advertises the Picc Vic underground railway line that was promoted in the 1970s. The leaflet title is long, it says "Manchester's underground rail link - a vital need for the whole region NOW". A black and white photo shows drilling on one of the platforms at Manchester Victoria station in the 1970s. The drilling rig was there to take test bore samples in preparation for the 1970s Picc Vic project, which would have put an underground railway under Manchester city centre. A schematic diagram shows the 1970s Picc Vic underground railway map, showing how the system would have taken trains from Bury and Bolton in the north, via an underground tunnel through Manchester city centre, and on to Hazel Grove and Alderley Edge in the south. A promotional leaflet page shows a map of the 1970s proposed underground railway under Manchester, showing how the new Picc Vic railway would thread its way under the city's streets between Victoria and Piccadilly stations.

Cover to the SELNEC leaflet advertising Greater Manchester's new Night Bus services from 15/16 October 1972. SELNEC, & that lovely logo, was formed in 1969 to run the areas buses becoming GMPTE in 1974. The Bee Network is now attempting to reintroduce parts of this lost network.

SELNEC : New Night Services booklet : 15/16 October 1972. The bold design is on a purple background with a SELNEC orange and white bus, with dipped headlights, under stylised orange sodium street lighting. Above the "New Night Services" title is the 'lazy S' SELNEC logo. Now, who can remember when many British cities and indeed larger towns still had night bus services? They're few and far between these days - what with greater car ownership and 'Uber". Manchester now only has a handful and the majority of those are 'student' south side; there is certainly nothing to the extent as shown in this 1972 booklet. This was a recast and extension of various existing services and, as can be seen, the network penetrated most of the boroughs that SELNEC's daytime services served. The graphic design is quite of its time, in terms of typography, and the cover is dominated by the 'flying S' of SELNEC, the South East Lancashire North East Cheshire PTE. The map, on the back cover, shows "KM" as designer and my money is on this being Ken Mortimer, the designer who helped craft the look of Manchester's transport as well as SELNEC and its successor Greater Manchester Transport's corporate identity. The main titling is in Cooper Black.

Well, we’ve finished the first day of our #Bury100 event and we enjoyed it - if you came along, we hope you did too. SELNEC 6800 made its first appearance after overhaul and it gave rides: it’ll do the same again tomorrow. Come down and join us tomorrow for a ride back in time!

We're hosting a little gathering of visiting SELNEC buses at our museum tomorrow - do you remember SELNEC and what those initials stood for? (no points for getting it right). We'll have SELNEC 2236, 6800 and 6809 visiting, and we'll put some of our orange buses out at the front of our display.
