Every single foreign student at Harvard and every other US institution had to get a visa which required them to specify the school, and is tracked in a DHS system called SEVIS by their school.
Trump: "Part of the problem w/ Harvard is there are about 31% of foreigners coming to Harvard...but they refuse to tell us who the people are...it shouldn't be 31%. It's too much. Bc we have Americans who want to go there...we want a list of those students...I assume with Harvard many will be bad"

NEW: A federal judge in Boston issued a preliminary injunction ordering the government to reactivate the SEVIS record of Rümeysa Öztürk—the Tufts PhD student detained by ICE in March for an op-ed—allowing her to participate once again in employment and research opportunities.

Just out of curiousity did the State Departmenr revoked these visas also inform those affected, students, postdocs... and their schools/work places in advance> Or, is it all just done sub rosa?

DHS has admitted in court it doesn’t have authority to terminate student non-immigrant status, even when it changes or terminates their SEVIS status, contrary to the info provided by unis to affected students.
This admission, a tactic to evade a lawsuit, is grounds for schools to defend students.

Wow, finally we get some answer as to what happened! They really did just run all names through law enforcement databases and terminate SEVIS status for anyone with a match, no matter the circumstances or magnitude of the "offense" (including things like speeding tickets and even dropped charges).
HAPPENING NOW: DHS official tells court that agency diverted 10-20 employees to run *1.3 million* names of foreign students through database that tracks criminal charges. Took 2-3 weeks.
There were ~6,400 hits (0.004%). But thousands were for charges that never led to convictions or were dropped.

If we had national citizenship ID cards the administration could just invalidate disfavored citizens’ ID the same way they deleted otherwise valid student visas from SEVIS. Tying it to voting would be particularly dangerous.
