Confidential to the folks who think "Golden Age" SF/F writers would be sad about current SF/F writers' lack of excitement over "AI": Why would you think the generation of writers who founded SFWA to defend the rights of working SF/F writers would somehow be cool with the plagiarism machine?

There's a whole self-congratulatory myth in the DNA of SF/F fandom that in the mid-20th c., SF could Ask The Hard Questions by sneaking it in with spaceships and ray guns, but it's led to the notion that SF/F *should* try to teach a Very Valuable Lesson about a contemporary issue. But that's 1-d!

I've donated and encourage other sf/f professionals and fans to do the same

Really happy to see folks in the SF/F community here stepping up and donating to food banks and organizations that feed people. This is @adapalmer.bsky.social's doing, and it's making a difference. You can donate too, even if you're not on the Bluesky SF/F community. Need is everywhere.

Over on the former Twitter I am still being blamed by certain dudes for SF/F going “woke,” and all I have to say to that is that if you think a middle-aged cis straight white man is largely responsible for the (in my opinion quite excellent) state of modern SF/F, you’re telling on yourself a lot.

It's interesting to me that when I and other authors suggest starting people new to SF/F on contemporary titles as an easier step-in to the genre, there are people who seem to think this means we think no one should read anything in SF/F that's more than 20 years old, EVER. This is, uh, very silly.

People will do what it is allowed to them. For a very long time in SF/F it was allowed. Now it is explicitly forbidden - nearly every convention in SF/F has a harassment policy. Now the question is whether those policies will be enforced and enforced equally.
God dammit. It is just endemic isn't it.

Jeremy Szal isn't the only SF/F author or fan no longer coming to Worldcon or other U.S. conventions b/c of Trump's actions. I know of many other people doing the same.

U.S. fandom has yet to truly process how all this is harming and changing international connections in the SF/F genre.

... and then the distribution to those drugstore racks consolidated, dropping SF/F, and chain bookstores took off and books that could be sold as hardcovers that looked good on shelves were in demand, and then you started getting longer novels in the SF/F genre. Market imperatives always matter.

Again, humor has always been in SF/F lit. The issue is the marketing. Also, re: humor in SF lit, it's important to note an epochal dividing line, especially in the US: Before Hitchhiker, and after it. No exaggeration to say the impact of Hitchhiker on humorous SF lit was like Star Wars in film.
Surely humour in SF/F has been a thing since the early 80s which is when the first Discworld novel came out. Granted it is more F than SF (which is what this discussion is largely about)

(additional caveat: SF/F lit. SF/F successfully marketed as comedy was already a thing in film/tv/comics.)

SF/F writer has no idea wtf Beyoncé could be talking about.

(Note that sf/f always had humor in it. The willingness to lead with that in the marketing - and the willingness to acknowledge that humor in SF/F can be something other than absurdist farce - is what's changed. I feel pretty safe taking credit for much of that. That's my contribution to the genre.)

Lots of new followers recently - hello! I write far too many sf/f books, best known for Children of Time et al.

This is only related in a sideways manner, but: the story of any small slice of humanity is the story of humanity, just boiled down and distilled. So:

In 2020, we had a lot of conversations about harassment at SF/F conventions, and Isaac Asimov came up several times.
the Epstein files are really devastating because they remind me of how many girls and women miss out on professional opportunities, mentorship and careers because of how many powerful, rich and influential men only view girls and women — and interactions with them — through the lens of sex
