If it's a signed first edition it's not entirely out of line, but otherwise you can just come to one of my signing events and I'll sign your copy for free, or for the holiday season call my local bookstore and order a copy there and I'll sign/personalize it and then they'll ship it off.

Yeah, I've been a tech nerd for decades but all the "AI" stuff really does feel like "Sooooo we're taking a type of computation that's actually bad at most things and putting it in a whole bunch of stuff to make it work worse because... if we don't the whole economy's going to crash or something?"

Instead of 'AI denier' (which is just spin-doctoring by the Cult of LLM to bias the reader against you) would it be more accurate to call you an "AI refuser"?

Every now and then I see myself referred to as an "AI Denier" and I want to be clear I acknowledge "AI" exists, it's just I think it's a massive energy drain, created from theft, implemented poorly for inappropriate tasks by loathsome tech executives who get hard at the idea of the rest of us dying

Krissy and I have decided that if we end up staying in our house past a certain age, we're going to install an elevator. We would still have to contend with other aspects, though. The property is generally not conducive to mobility issues.
Yeah. Fiancee and I are beginning to plan our "age in place" home... she can't conceive of a home without a basement, and I'm equally adamant about eliminating stairs.
So that's gonna be a point of contention for a while.

I don't doubt it. Living spaces are generally designed around the able-bodied, and everyone who is that stops being that eventually. Things you could easily navigate at 30 or 50 are things that will get you at 75 and above.
Apparently area rugs are also agents of the Grimm reaper, statistically dangerous over a certain age.

Nope, that's accurate. I started making myself reach for the handrails when I turned 40 so it would be muscle memory when I got older, and it's already saved my ass a couple of times when I've slipped on the stairs.
@scalzi.com - for reasons I can't explain, my brain remembers you urging people to use handrails, because stairs are a technology actively trying to kill you. If I've misremembered this, sorry.

I'm looking forward to the classy Merchant-Ivory-esque remake, "Whaleautumn"
In fact people have met their partners on the boat, and there are "get to know each other" events and such. It happens! The cruise also (importantly) has a code of conduct policy everyone signs to get on board, which is taken seriously by the JoCo organization. Which helps people mingle comfortably.
Any meet-cute stories on the nerd boat? Have you officiated a marriage of any couples who met there yet? I think if I had a chance at nerd love on the cruise, that might get me to step out of my comfort zone and go. Right now I think “nah, I’m too old for that, it’ll be nothing but young couples.”
