Hi everyone, I'm Tired.
Dad jokes aside, I'm Cal.
I write SFFH books that rarely fit into a neat subcategory. High fantasy westerns, Cosmic horror fantasy, a book that was supposed to be cozy but is now becoming something else...unhinged.
Intro: Tell us about yourself and your work! Or, honestly, whatever you like (if you're tired of introducing yourself repeatedly, haha)

"Velta scooped Berrick up and tried to put him into one of the broom’s saddlebags, only to discover that he had a very cat-like aversion to being made to do *anything*."
- Strange and Sundry Magics.
I probably should have specified that I meant one of your own, but I suppose there's also nothing against sharing someone else's (provided you have permission).

Like all speculative stories, the diegetic (oho big words are coming out) fictions start with the question "what if...?" it's human* nature to dream about other possibilities and I think that would carry over to these second worlds.
*while my characters are not all human, they still dream
I feel like this question, though well-intentioned, is confusing. What I mean is, if SFF as a genre existed (or exists) in your fictional world, what does it look like? (:

Oldie but a goodie--The Gormenghast Trilogy by Mervyn Peake: www.goodreads.com/book/show/39...
These books were so influential for me, especially when it comes to The Wings of Ashtaroth. They're dark, Gothic, & sweeping.
oh boy... I think setting has a huge part to play speculative story or not. Ground me in the world with tactile and sensory descriptions, how the characters move through and react to cultures both familiar and different.
Do NOT give me a history lesson in your prologue.
For me, a huge part (not the whole part) is whether setting/culture/etc informs character within a story. If it feels like no consideration has been paid to how a character is informed by their surroundings, I tend to bounce off it

I'm Cal, a Canadian author who likes writing weird ideas and complicated characters. Especially angry women.
I'm currently juggling a pair of WIPs right now. One is a whimsical adventure fantasy, and the other is basically John Wick but with witches.
Don't forget to quote-post, include the hashtag so others (and me!) can find you, and use alt text for any images so that everyone can particpate. (:
