And al watʒ holʒ inwith, nobot an olde caue
Or a crevisse of an olde cragge…

The dark and forbidding entrance to the cave at Wetton Mill, Dovedale, Derbyshire - a potential candidate for the Green Chapel in the medieval masterpiece Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. #AdoorableThursday #SGGK

In fantastic news for medievalists, 'Perfume and Milk' from Florence + the Machine's new album Everybody Scream contains references to Julian of Norwich's Revelations of Divine Love, and allusions to the General Prology of the Canterbury Tales (as well as, I think, the opening of Fitt II of SGGK)

Delightful detail by Dorothea Braby: the Green Knight speaks with Arthur, the governor of his gang, while Gawain looks on. Classic fifties colour and imagination grace Gwyn Jones’s translation of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight for the Golden Cockerel Press, 1952. #SGGK #SirGawain #Printmaking

my problem is that nothing will ever be as funny as my paper on SGGK adaptation at Kzoo last year, but I really wish this paper could be that funny

I've created a new web page for Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (#SGGK) which as well as covering my own illustrated translation (published by @wiltonsquare.bsky.social) also contains links to numerous articles about this literary masterpiece. More here: www.mythicalbritain.co.uk/sir-gawain-a...

I did! Overambitious might be one word for it.

At the same time, scholarship on Pearl and SGGK does not often consider just how weird Cleanness and Patience are in context.

All scholars of SGGK are already quite well aware....

I am about to embark on stanza #70 translating Sir Gawain and the Green knight into modern English alliterative verse. (That's #70 out of 101). It's part of my ongoing online translation, available at alliteration.net/poetry/sggk. People may not realize what that entails ... so here's a thread.
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight: Translating the Middle English poem into modern alliterative verse.
This ongoing translation by Paul D. Deane takes the classic Middle English poem, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight by the anonymous Pearl Poet and sets it in modern alliterative verse.

Just finished stanza #56 of my Sir Gawain and the Green Knight translation! The hounds are off ... but alas, I have 55 stanzas to go ...

In the Green Chapel - colour version of a b/w linocut print illustration in my translation of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Nobut an old cave? Certainly a dark and haunting place, where the Devil’s matins might be heard at midnight... #TombTuesday #linocut #SirGawain #SGGK

My paper 'Time, Horror, and Iconoclasm: Creative Responses to SGGK' is published in The journal Études Médiévales Anglaises, I delivered this as a presentation in Nancy (France) and this paper is the formalized peer reviewed outcome.

A detail from a new print I have been working on, featuring Sir Gawain as he leaves Camelot and rides out on Gringolet in search of his nemesis, the Green Knight. Up on the Mythical Britain website soon! #SGGK #linocut #printmaking

...a horrible horseman hurtled through the doors
his body as brawny as any can be
so bull-necked, big-thighed, bulky and square
so long-legged, large-limbed, looming so tall
I can hardly tell if he were half troll
or merely as large as living man can be--
