A Jay shaking the rain off. In Welsh a Jay is called Sgrech y Coed. Sgrech means shriek or scream and coed means woods. Literal translation "the woods screaming" and with lots of Jays present, the woods really will scream with their calls. What a very apt name. 🪶 #birdingWales #UKBirding #Thursjay

A sgrech y coed is often as close as we get to a Jay which is a shame - such an appropriate name, perhaps Garrulus glandarius is a step in this direction - as this is a lovely bird as this photo shows

Here is how you can picture or identify a jay through its shape, high-contrast colours, and sounds. Shape and Size Body Size: Chunky body, roughly 35 centimetres (14 inches) long. Proportions: Shorter legs and broader wings than a typical crow. Head feature: A small, feathered crest on top of its head that rises when the bird is excited or alarmed. High-Contrast Colours If you have some light or colour perception, look for these specific high-contrast markings against the duller pinkish-brown body The Blue Wing Patch: The most striking feature is a vivid, electric-blue panel on the wing, brightened by fine black bars. Idea of a home invasion horror in the Welsh valleys has always made me laugh.
