148-9 SHIBOYUGI: Playing Death Games to Put Food on the Table (anime, TV series+movie)

A phenomenal piece of artwork.

After reading the light novels I feel like a have a greater appreciation for the anime, but the novels are what really made me fall in love with the story. #SHIBOYUGI
Wow, they made a lot of changes to Cloudy Beach. It probably works better to maintain the mystery in an audiovisual content but I think pretty much everyone, Yuki, Essay, Mozuku, even Hakushi comes across a little worse for those adaptional choices even if it's a more impactful whole. #SHIBOYUGI

okay so like, is Bookwalker just fucking useless now? I can't even buy Shiboyugi volumes anymore and I know I could like a couple months ago

Mishiro using lilies in her analogy for defining the 'self' is anime original, and y'know what? Good choice there. #SHIBOYUGI

*banging my hands on the table* Volume 7, volume 7! #SHIBOYUGI
146. Playing Death Games to Put Food on the Table, Vol. 6 (light novel)

From Yuki's Maiden Race to her most recent game against a true phantom. What has she gained and what has she lost in this deranged world?

Easily my favorite since 2, I'm desperate for the next book even if there are no games.

Was going to start a new blog post, tumbled down the Shiboyugi memory lane once again instead. This curse is never going to be lifted at this point.

Reposted those SHIBOYUGI tweets since I messed up the volume number, bleh.

Knowing both what happens at the end of Scrap Building and in a future game really does enhance it. Of this first stretch of games the Mishiro ones really are my favorite. #SHIBOYUGI

oh wait Shiboyugi had a movie for one of the games?

shit i should watch that

i wonder if/when a second season... maybe i should read the LN

If only you had gotten the preservation treatment from SHIBOYUGI.

I've had a good year in anime ngl

shiboyugi, chainsmoker cat, and needy girl overdose have especially stood out to me

In an era of media that's trying to play it safe, both financially and in terms of palatability, stories with rough edges, sharp points, and not afraid to find their voice is peak

Now that I'm caught up on the English SHIBOYUGI novels I need to pick something else to read.

Also, the TV interview is a complete invention of the anime, and doesn't really make sense because the organizers just don't work like that. If the whole thing came off more as a hallucination of Yuki that might track better. #SHIBOYUGI

I liked the SHIBOYUGI anime just fine, but I'm enjoying* the light novels immensely.

*May include suffering
145. Playing Death Games to Put Food on the Table, Vol. 5 (light novel)

Yuki faces a mock battle under a new teacher who shares the same type of impairment as her, training her first protégée, and a game based around sword duels.

Oof. This was harder to finish than any previous entry. #SHIBOYUGI

Fucking Candle Woods, man.

It's definitely the right call to end the TV series there. We do get a lot of POV from Moegi during the game, but I think they expanding some of her brief history with Kyara by a lot and the Nightjar stuff is mostly new.

Airi barely gets named, but Shion is. #SHIBOYUGI

Rewatched Scrap Building in the anime with the dub (it's adequate). Besides the non-sequitar sections added throughout the show, I did notice a couple differences: we actually see what happens to Mishiro with the beast, she doesn't build herself a shelter, and the final result is instant. #SHIBOYUGI

Golden Bath truly one of the most pathetic showings of all time, but that's why it's beautiful. I do think I prefer how it plays out in the books better because the anime certainly streamlined it.

The post-game speech from Yuki's agent knowing what I know now hits though. #SHIBOYUGI

Lmao and then there is a game with retrofuturist robots that are still somehow effective. #SHIBOYUGI v5
I'm actually not a fan of the game mechanics for Halloween Night since it relies on a sort of 3rd party that doesn't have a will of their own but never really addresses that. Even if robots would be unrealistic I might have preferred that as since that's basically how they act anyway. #SHIBOYUGI v4
October 6, 2026 at 2:07 PM
Huh, I'm not sure why I thought Scrap Building and Golden Bath weren't consecutive in the anime. Maybe is was the week between episodes. Maybe the lengthy pregame narrative. Or maybe I was conflating it with Ghost House because I definitely forgot who Kinko was the first time around. #SHIBOYUGI

The "real world" Shion stuff is so funny to me. #SHIBOYUGI v4
October 5, 2026 at 6:40 PM
The way Yuki survived Halloween Night by the skin of her teeth in volume 4, and even going all the way back to her 3rd game when she first met Hakushi in volume 5, she really does have the devil's own luck. #SHIBOYUGI
144. Playing Death Games to Put Food on the Table volume 4 (light novel)

After nearly 50 games Yuki is forced to expand her network of contacts in the real world during the lead up to Halloween Night. The shadow of Candle Woods looms long.

Like Cloudy Beach this has only 1 game but a lot more IRL.

Spoilers for SHIBOYUGI light novels volumes 5 and 6 //

Yuki becomes basically teen girl Daredevil after permanently losing vision in one eye. It's ridiculous echolocation, but in a world where blood turns into cotton and limbs can be reattached with no real rehab it's not the most outlandish thing.
