Siwi vocab for the day:

əlbuṛj "pigeon tower" (pictured below)
abdir "male pigeon"
tabdərt "female pigeon"
ṭaʕṭaʕ "pigeon (in baby talk)"
arraf "nest"
Let's talk about how "ammonia" (NH₃) gets its name 🧪.

Along the way, we'll talk about Alexander the Great, ancient Egyptian gods & a Roman misunderstanding.

Let's start with these giant CASTLES made for PIGEONS in Siwa, Egypt, a tiny desert town built around an oasis, with 2 dry salt lakes nearby.

Since when does Xtra (of all publications) forget that people can be bi?!

Or young, and still figuring shit out?

I’ve only followed Siwi in the last couple of years (since she put out that banger “Guilty Pleasure”), but she just seems like an intelligent, talented, and thoughtful young woman. FFS.

Think I've just had my first encounter with LLM-fabricated language data. Some Indonesian paper mill journal just published a paper containing completely fabricated Siwi data, citing me as the source.

(It could have been made up by a human, but it looks like what you get when you ask ChatGPT.)

A culturally conditioned colexification:

"(muezzin) calls to prayer" = "(rooster) crows"

e.g.
Siwi (Egypt): əddən (< Arabic)
Zarma (Niger): că

Any other examples?

In-universe, that’s standing in for Ul’dahn. Her “native” tongue as a Sagolii nomad would be more analogous to an Amazigh language like Siwi.

It's not often you get to see Javanese shadow puppetry and a full Gamelan outside of Indonesia, let alone in your random Californian city! Thanks to @seismogenic.bsky.social for letting us know it was happening (and well played)!

Arabic loans into Siwi usually feature q; practically every Arabic dialect spoken anywhere near Siwi (certainly both the ones they're most familiar with) have turned q into either ʔ or g.

Anywa has borrowed Arabic jayš "army" as:

déèc "soldier"

Presumably, as with Siwi əddeš, the source was a dialect with long-distance alveolopalatal dissimilation.
