A sketched image of the tanks used by the mers in the egg farm AU, drawn by Bones. The main tank is in a sort of kidney-bean shaped, with a small divot inwards on the lower bottom right. In the upper left of the shape is an area called "'tide' pools and beaches". This curves into an area called the "shallows and tunnels" which extends along the top of the tank and turns into an area called "sun rocks and tunnels." Blow both of these in the dip of the tank shape is an area called "deep water kelp forest." About 2/3rds from the left of the tank is a line that spans from the top of the tank to the bottom called the "bulkhead" which leads into the "time out tank". This area of the tank mirrors the main tank, but at a smaller separated scale. In the divot at the bottom of the shape is a square tank called the "loader tank" which has connections between the main and timeout tanks. A screenshot of a Discord message from Bones: Wide variety of depths and a good range of hides, sun exposure levels, textures, and other enrichment/environmental conditions within one HUGE tank. The "time out tank" when not in use has doors open so the mers can freely traverse through the loader tank / sliding doors in the glass and use it as extra space but it has a couple dif uses. 1. New mer adjustment. New mers is like introducing cats to each other, you never QUITE know how its gonna go, so putting the new mer in a tank sharing a wall with the others is a good way to let them get used to each other without risking injury or fights. 2. Breaking up fights. In the event where a fight breaks out you don't always necessarily need to break them up. Similarly to big dogs play fighting some mer sparring is healthy. Its fun, its quality enrichment they'd get in the wild as well and its good exercise. BUT sometimes you do need to break them up, especially if heat / rut / laying hormones get involved and someone isn't in a right state of mind to not be OVERLY possessive of their bonded mate, or in Calamity's early days where you would THINK he warmed up but lashes out to feel a sense of control) give them space to cool down without someone bothering them and setting them off again. 3. Prevention of fertilization during laying without complete social quarantine. This one is the most common use. There's nesting materials in the time out tank that can be moved around into various hides, including one particular hide that's split by the glass wall, so they can have a podmate next to them without risk of insemination. They can only use it for this if the mer doesn't have too many complications with laying (like SL does) but if its a safe option it is the most natural and comfortable for them. Especially when farmers get in diving gear to help them out where its most comfortable. But some of these lil shits are not to be trusted and stick their tentacles through the holes in the glass and treat it like a glory hole so they still need the belts and condoms. THOSE ARE MEANT SO YOU CAN HOLD YOUR MATES HAND YOU FIENDS !! The bulkhead doesn't run all the way to the bottom of the pool, its more like a bridge and if the glass is slid out the way the mers could freely swim under it, but when the time out tank is in use they roll out a heavy divider (kinda like a garage door on its side) so the mers cant jump over (once again, farmers HCXL had to learn the hard way during a heat cycle.) The structure is similarly varied but a bit smaller than the main one under the shallows, rocks, and beaches there's a network of aquatic tunnels for mers to explore and hide in and transform into a den, some are too small for crimson unfortunately but that's because its important for the smaller mers to be able to have their own territory that's unchallenged by their bigger podmates. There's sun exposed rocks for them to lay out on, man made tide pools that get restocked with live shellfish and urchins for them to snack on, a dark shady kelp forest to stalk larger fish in. No they cant ALL hunt live fish but its important to at least give them all the opportunity to stretch those muscles for enrichment and to keep them as strong as they can be. A mini kelp forest may seem like someone bigger like Crimson will just get tangled up in but fun fact: grey whales regularly make homes in the natural kelp forests, so I'm deciding crimson comes from a kelp forest kinda biome. In no small part because the image of Big Scary mer only visible in flashes through the swirling kelp is so hot. The loader tank is an empty tank just big enough for the biggest mers to stretch end to end so they can get a sling under for transfer into / out of a truck / portable tank and veterinary tanks are elsewhere on the property, where they can keep things sterile and clean and prevent any viruses from spreading during treatment. (Or mating during egg week since insurmountable expanses of dry land seems to be the only thing that can keep these menaces apart if the heat and rut sync up in a bonded pair who are particularly sex crazed during cycles, and even THAT doesn't always work sometimes XL will wake up to like, Dianxia beached in the hallway like 100 ft from the main tank 2/3rds of the way to SLs sad horny lil trilling. He's a man on a mission.)
