They have the “funding” but according to Columbia Riverkeeper its not going to happen. Amazon wants to build these new reactors on the Hanford site and that is still far from being cleaned up. You can sign a petition against SMNRs on the Riverkeeper website www.columbiariverkeeper.org

personally? new large scale nuclear too expensive and too slow.
SMNRs not real. never built in a western country, financials too uncertain.
Existing nuclear? keep them open as long as possible. important low carbon electricity source

Excluding the 3 SMNRs that exist, the average life is 40 years, with some currently negotiating for another 60 but they might not get it on a number of grounds.

You're right - it's normal. Small aeroderivative turbines have been around for decades. Greater emissions are a worry but most can operate on hybrid fuels including Hydrogen. Other solutions might include SMNRs. AI is not going away - the time to get ahead of the logistics is right now.

Leaked EU Electrification Action Plan recognises need for 200GW of energy storage by 2030
Lowering the upfront costs of electrification for end-users across the industrial sector, transport and buildings. Increased access to infrastructure and enhancing the productivity of electricity grids through investment in transmission, EV charging networks, port infrastructure and district heating and cooling. Accelerating innovation in electrification solutions, including emerging technologies such as small modular nuclear reactors (SMNRs), hydrogen and carbon capture and storage (CC&S). Growing and upskilling electrification technologies workforces and the European manufacturing and supply chain sectors. Each set of barriers is explained and put into context alongside the measures the EC is proposing to take, for instance, in taxation proposals to improve the electricity-to-gas price ratio and “aggressively phasing out” fossil fuel subsidies in the post-2030 Energy Union package for barrier No.1. Energy storage as system flexibility tool The role of energy storage is emphasised in the actions proposed to enhance the flexibility of the electricity network. Enhanced electric system flexibility is a mitigator for the electricity price spikes, negative and zero pricing events. The EU wants to encourage participation in flexibility markets from customer-sited resources at the household, commercial, and industrial levels, spanning vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technologies up to AI data centres. “Energy storage is an essential element to optimise...

I think hydrogen could still have niche applications in certain situations.

Hydrogen derived from SMNRs during periods of underutilized electrical export would probably be an economical source. Eliminating electrical lines help reduce line costs.

Problem is, AI will probably use all electricity.

IF YOU ARE IN ILLINOIS OR KNOW PEOPLE THERE, TAKE ACTION: Bills in the Illinois House and Senate would repeal the remaining moratorium on construction of LARGE and so-called ADVANCED nuclear power plants; and redefine small modular nuclear reactors (SMNRs) as “renewable energy.”

That's a myth. Storage technology is expanding so fast that the grid will be stable using renewables before the SMNRs are built, and at a fraction of the price.

Nice. I heard that one of the advantages of SMNRs was that they used spent fuel from the big reactors. I guess not?

Good: Competing against private companies, cloud computing infrastructure, centralised & controlled data repos

Bad: climate impact without SMNRs/renewables, automation impact on workers, over-eager use of unexplainable & low accuracy algorithms leading to frustrating or harmful tech
