Target name "UNKNOWN" in recent #JWST 🔭 releases got all sorts of surprises. Here is a chunk of the Pinwheel Galaxy (not containing SN2023ixf). Lots of red saturated pixels.

In May 2023 I was lucky enough to capture the Supernova SN2023ixf in M101 for 8 days in a row. You can really see the expansion over time. 8 days of clear nights is almost unheard of in Essex.

When SN2023ixf went off last year, the closest supernova in nearly a decade, NuSTAR was able to take observations within just four days - early enough to observe high-energy X-rays from the explosion while lower-energy X-rays were still obscured by the circumstellar material. 🔭🛰️

This is one of the most gorgeous pix of an exploding star I've ever seen! Can you spot it?

I have a solar mass worth of info about it in my newsletter today!

SN2023ixf in M101 is pretty trivially visible with any decent optics. These three photos are from last year, from tonight, and from tonight with the supernova marked, for easy reference, and taken from suburban San Jose. Very cool to see a "nearby" bright supernova!

<Annie Potts voice> WE GOT ONE! </>

A new supernova has gone off in the nearby spiral galaxy M101! Besides being in a ridiculously gorgeous galaxy, this will be one of the best studied exploding stars in a decade. It's visible in small telescopes!

I’m giving talks in Seattle and Portland, and the supernova SN2023ixf just popped off in the nearby galaxy M101!

🚨SUPERNOVA ALERT!!!🚨 SN2023ixf has just been discovered in the Pinwheel Galaxy, M101! At 21 million light years away it’s the closest SN to Earth in a decade and should get bright enough for amateur telescopes!

M101, at a distance of 27 million light years, is a spiral galaxy in the constellation Ursa Major. This image captures supernova SN2023ixf a day after it was discovered back in May ‘23 and is a total of 12 hours of data captured in RGB (5 hrs) and Ha and OIII (7 hrs) from my yard in central MA.

Two years ago...
A giant star collapsed in the M101 galaxy, resulting in a magnificent Type-II supernova named sn2023ixf.

I searched the LCO Global Obs archives and found valuable datas from that period, and managed to calculate a lightcurve for this exceptionnal event.
