It would be thirty-eight years before another Black man held that same award.

Four months after that Oscar, in August 1964, the phone rang. James Forman from SNCC told Harry Belafonte that Freedom Summer was running out of money in Mississippi within seventy-two hours.

A line of SNCC cars appeared on the road ahead, and the trucks fell back.

Poitier and Belafonte arrived at an Elks hall in the Black section of Greenwood, where hundreds of young volunteers were waiting. Poitier stood up to speak, and he did not give a movie star's speech.

"It'll be harder for them to knock off two Black stars than one."

They stuffed the cash into doctors' bags and flew from Newark to Jackson. SNCC field secretary Willie Blue picked them up in a station wagon at the tiny Greenwood airstrip and drove them toward town.

“This country was a DEMOCRATIC PARADISE before 2016!” (J. Edgar Hoover & the United Fruit Company howl in glee, every member of SNCC & NAACP reaches for the gin)

SNCC did both, protest & organize
Ella Baker invited the students to Shaw and got them started

Happy Birthday to Casey Hayden, a SNCC organizer, educator, & writer who helped shape the Civil Rights and women's movements.

From Texas sit-ins to Mississippi organizing and Freedom Summer, Hayden dedicated her life to grassroots change.

Hard to imagine who in 61 would have been tweeting MORE than the SNCC.
"The Jews who went to Mississippi didn't take selfies and post tweets."

Okay, but honestly, if tweets had been a thing in 1961, many of them probably would have done.

I say this because Trump is a Racist and they know this, MLK Medgar Evers SCLC NAACP SNCC The Poverty Law Center and Others didn't fight the fight for nothing!
This may get me removed but.....

Black people that support Trump ain't nothing more than House N*ggers!

I'm not sorry, I'm pissed off!

SNCC photographer Danny Lyon is literally Jewish! He’s only 84 and still around

A number of Jim Crow assholes recognized this!

The reason Bull Connor became a national name is the NAACP and SNCC realized he was a giant dick who could not *not* respond with gratuitous violence and cruelty.

It is not lost on me how early Twitter -> late Twitter -> X recapitulates the SNCC -> SDS -> Nixon trajectory pretty cleanly

Would SNCC be more or less disfunctional if they had discord chats
October 23, 2026 at 3:47 PM
The SNCC would've had a strong TikTok game.
"Pioneers of nonviolent resistance had no use for performative stunts" I'm not sure I agree a hundred percent with your police work there Lou

My mother in law Cathy Cade was a SNCC member and freedom rider who later became a movement photographer specifically because visual representation is important and powerful. www.nytimes.com/2024/12/20/a...

She became a photographer the same year she came out, chronicling the lives of women in same-sex relationships — something most people had never seen.

The racists used violence against the non-violent protesters. MLK, a great admirer of Gandhi, preached non-violence. SNCC led those protests. The Highlander School in Tennessee taught non-violent techniques. MLK understood how powerful it was.

SNCC would have *killed* for a New York City congressman-in-waiting to take part in the Freedom Summer Project, and they would have been absolutely right to want that publicity.
October 22, 2026 at 4:38 PM
Folks do know that there are plenty of student activists from the Civil Rights Era who are still alive, right? One can simply talk to them rather than declaring that they would have disavowed modern protest tactics.

My mother's entire highschool friend group was in SNCC. She is 80.

The idea that if social media had existed that sophisticated organizers like SNCC wouldn't have had a social media strategy and the Freedom Riders wouldn't have used smartphones to document Freedom Summer is actually kind of racist, like, those Black organizers used every tool they had.

This is just moral cowardice.

This is like saying MLK and Malcolm X and SNCC and all the other civil rights leaders shouldn't have fought against Jim Crow bc it would help Republicans win.

This is just an elaborate justification for complicity.
A helpfully clear exchange here

Hasan: "So your argument is that [Minnesota ICE protesters] should stay at home because immigration is a salient issue for Donald Trump. Opposing ICE is only going to help Trump. Wait until we win the election in 2028."

Yglesias: "Yes that is what I would have said"
October 23, 2026 at 7:30 PM
Facts.

There are a lot of parts of King’s strategy with SCLC and SNCC that absolutely cannot work in modernity in part due to legislative changes that make some tactics unsound and others downright dangerous.
When I was reading about SCLC for my dissertation in the 00s, it struck me how often a key tactic in various towns was to “fill the jail” so that the town in question would have to make some concession.

I was like, “Well, that’s sure not a repeatable tactic now.”

OK if SNCC had TikTok we'd be in Wakanda by now

I cannot assign David Halberstam's history of the civil rights movement under JFK/LBJ, 'The Children', to Twitter. But can people watch a movie? Oprah spent her money producing 'Selma' so you don't have to read a whole book or stay ignorant.

I assumed that the reason you don't seem to have your timeline right or know the organizational history of SNCC and the SCLC is because you're not american and didn't spend as much time learning about it in school, rather than simple ignorance.
