Wanted to see what this would sound like on the S-SMP.

So I had this song from Sailor Moon S SNES stuck in my head lately. I think I've been getting better at using the brr_encoder for the s-smp chip.

I'm really happy that Furnace tracker exists and opened up the SPC700 chip to whoever wants to play with it without having to wrangle an absurd VST that constantly crashes or having to write in OpenMPT just keeping the limitations in your head and then run SNESmod hoping you didn't fuck it up

I gotta start using this too. I've gone between [SPC700] or [SNES cover] or the name of the program/sound driver (SNESMOD or EBMusEd/N-SPC)

I'd love to help! I'm fluent at SNESMOD and N-SPC

Now this is a SNESMod render... the original audio files that I used were Schism Tracker renders. For this one specifically, it affects the sound a little bit due to slight note key on timing differences.

You're right. I think furnace has a SNES option but it's probably not very hardware accurate. I had the most success using impulse tracker files converted to spc with SNESMOD. There's also a vst called c700 I think, which was easy to use but had memory problems.

Even back then, I didn't exclusively use samples from SNES games, knowing that the chip could, within memory limitations, take any sample. It wasn't until much later that I was able to properly get a handle on the filesize (starting with SNESMod giving me a baseline).

I know an absolute shitload of people who can do this. Converting to 8bit 22050khz will probably be close to what you want. You can also literally load the sample into famitracker or furnace, or use SNESMOD depending on the system you're targeting, then play it in an emulator for that system.

So for specific systems, I use:

NES: famitracker (very good tracker, probably my favorite to work with)

SNES: there's a utility called SNESMOD that can convert a .it file to .spc format. There's also s vst called c700 that I've used less often. I never tried to put either of these in a game....

this is awesome!! always happy to see breakthroughs like this.

about snes instruments: i know there's a tool for OpenMPT that lets you convert a normal sample into a downsampled .brr one with the loop point intact. i can't remember the name but it came in handy for me a while ago. maybe "SNESMOD"?

SNESMod was the other main sound driver that I used. However, I felt like the sound driver was showing its age over time, again caused by a few quirks here and there. I still use it for some sample conversions, though sometimes TAD's sample conversions come out superior for what I'm looking for.

OpenMPT+SNESMOD環境導入したけど脳みそが理解を拒んだのでfurnaceつかいます…早くSPCエクスポート対応してほしい

This is because the sections that have to repeat to save memory involve all of the channels instead of just one, and there's only a couple of kind of loops that can be done: one via the orderlist and pattern system, and one via a command that SNESMod has not yet implemented.

That SNES soundtrack list includes the original Dangerous Dungeons, Dangerous Christmas (though in both cases I think I rendered off of Schism Tracker, but still did the SNESMod conversions), Steam Rogue (not the GB-esque one, but its unfinished predecessor available as a demo)...

For this game, as well as almost every single AdventureIslands game I've been involved in (Total Party Kill being the odd one out, as it's NES music, not SNES music), they have been rendered off of SPC files I converted over using Mukunda Johnson's SNESMod.
December 15, 2024 at 6:23 PM
That, and the tool I used to make the music for this particular game is called IT2NSF... by Mukunda Johnson. The same author as SNESMod, actually.
December 2, 2024 at 6:16 PM
I usually make original music for the SNES these days. My original sound driver, which I've hacked before, is SNESMod by Mukunda Johnson, and I've used it for over ten years.

Something else to possibly keep in mind, new versions of OpenMPT use a special kind of compression on their samples or something that has to be turned off in the advanced settings to be compatible with SNESMOD, an IT to SPC conversion tool. idk if this will use similar compression but yeah
