It's useful in flow cytometry as a step towards labelling cells. Similarly, in SNPchip-based genetics it was a step towards assigning genotype labels to fluorescence intensities.
Those are settings with "real" clusters, as opposed to "shoe size clustering" for market segmentation (also useful!)

There was a brief flurry of papers about high-density linkage disequilibrium maps (using SNPchip data), showing linkage spines and haplotype blocks.

I got caught up in haplotype blocks, sub-blocks, holes, and intersecting blocks, and experimented with subsampling to make patterns more obvious.
