#SONJÉ
Did someone press fast-forward? Our baby elephants of Umani Springs, Lenny and Sulwe, are constantly on the move. Like all besties, they are always challenging one another, and as you can see, neither wants to come second today!

On Christmas Day, Sonje presented our Umani family with the a special gift: a newborn baby girl. We have named her Sulwe, which means ‘morning star’ in the Luo language.

Shot by poachers as a baby, Sonje miraculously survived and we’re thrilled she’s now welcomed her very own baby into the world!

Mischief, times two! Lenny and Sulwe aren’t related by birth — their mothers, Lima Lima and Sonje, are both orphans rescued and raised through our Orphans’ Project — but they could be mistaken for twins.

Sulwe was born on Christmas Day to ex-orphan Sonje and a besotted bull named Osama. Now she's growing wild in the same Umani forest where her mum's "honeymoon" played out.

The full story is worth a read.

Baby Sulwe is one of our grandcalves, born in 2024 to ex-orphan Sonje. Since her birth, we've met a further 18 wild-born babies, who were all born in 2025. Meet 18 reasons that gave us hope this year: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/o...

Ex-orphans Lima Lima, Sonje and Zongoloni have a long-established habit of disappearing into the Kibwezi Forest for days – sometimes weeks – at a stretch. But they always come back to Murera and the dependent herd, and when they do, everyone loves catching up.

Welcome home.

There's something about little brothers – always trying to get one over.

Sulwe and Lenny grew up side by side at Umani. Their mothers, Lima Lima and Sonje, were orphaned as infants. Now they're wild mothers themselves. Proof that rescue works.

Newest wild-born baby Sulwe is full of curiosity as she investigates a rock in her path. In true baby elephant fashion, her balance doesn’t quite match her enthusiasm—leading to an adorably wobbly moment!

"Art Sonje Center in Seoul has opened the first large-scale institutional exhibition in Korea dedicated to queer art, presenting an opportunity to encounter practices and perspectives that have long been overlooked in mainstream cultural spaces."
Once taboo, now on view: Seoul debuts major queer art exhibition
In Korea, queer culture is still often treated as a social taboo, remaining mostly at the margins of public discourse. Art Sonje Center in Seoul has opened the

It’s our trio of trouble — Lenny, Sulwe, and Zigi!

Our Umani Springs Reintegration Unit is quickly turning into a crèche! Orphans Lima Lima, Sonje, and Zongoloni all gave birth quickly — and now their little ones are growing up like siblings.

Umani's two youngest calves have adopted Amali as their personal climbing frame – clambering, crawling, and tumbling over her whenever she lies down. Mothered by ex-orphans Zongoloni and Sonje, Zigi and Sulwe are two of more than 90 calves born to elephants we have rescued, raised, rewilded.

Not every orphan can walk the vast distances of Tsavo. Some carry injuries that never fully heal.
That’s why Umani Springs exists. Sonje arrived in 2012 with a shattered knee. Today, she’s a matriarch, a mother, and proof that a different kind of life is still a full one.

Murera is enjoying some 'me time' as we count down the final stretch of her pregnancy. Yesterday, when Faraja arrived with two wild bulls in tow, Murera was unsettled. Lima Lima and Sonje quickly noticed – they gathered the orphans and led everyone home, with Murera safely at the rear.

Lenny, Sulwe, and Zigi — born to ex-orphans Lima Lima, Sonje, and Zongoloni in the last 15 months.

The rains have arrived. This is their second green season. The Kibwezi Forest looks very different to last month — and they are making the most of it.

Sulwe is mastering the art of multitasking — balancing on three legs to itch a scratch, while prepping for a drink!

At just three months old, Sulwe is the third calf of our Umani Springs orphans, a gift to the world on 25th December: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/news/updates/sonje-sulwe

Ex-orphan Zongoloni was desperate to be a mum!

When Murera gave birth to Mwana in 2023, Zongoloni made unsuccessful attempts to kidnap the baby. After watching Lima Lima and Sonje become mums, it was finally her turn.

In April 2025, she gave birth to Zigi - a wonderful moment for our ex-orphan.

To date, we know of 77 calves born to elephants we’ve rescued and raised: their mothers choosing return, so that we might share in their joy.

Three of the births in the last year have been in Umani. Babies Sulwe and Zigi, under the watchful gaze of mothers Sonje and Zongoloni, are two of them.

You looking at me! The answer is a resounding yes, because it's hard to take your eyes off beautiful - and cheeky - little Sulwe.

Born on Christmas Day 2024, Sulwe is the 70th known calf to be born to an orphan we have rescued and raised, in her case, mothered by Sonje.

Mwana deserves an award for auntie of the year! Little Lenny delivered a serious head butt, then realised the error in his ways as nannies Kiasa, Sonje, and even baby Sulwe thundered over. Lenny is a precocious chap, but he is also learning that bad manners won’t be tolerated amongst his family!

Bold and strong like her ex-orphan mother Sonje, one afternoon, Sulwe showed her mettle when warthogs emerged from their burrow and caught the group unawares. The nannies quickly gathered the babies, but Sulwe stood her ground and blew a squeaky, shrill trumpet to chase the intruders away!

Tiny toes, big milestones. Just a day after her Christmas Day arrival, Sulwe ventured to the waterhole for her very first ‘swim’! Sulwe joins Lenny, born earlier in December, as the newest members of the Umani herd. Discover Sulwe’s story: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/news/updates/sonje-sulwe

If there is an afterlife I want to come back as a carer at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.

Lima Lima and Sonje, are both orphans rescued and raised
through the Orphans' Project. They are constantly embroiled in fun and drama, either teaming up together or ganging up on one another. ❤️
