#SOSUS
just for clarification, like I've been saying all day:

IF it were a nuclear attack, we'd know by now. Some tell-tale signs:
1. Submarines powering up their reactors causing heat blooms in anticipation of moving into an AOE
2. Submarines purging their tubes caught on SOSUS/underwater acoustic arrays

None of these WW2 ships Reagan had pushed out were going to help the USN if things went hot. What would have made a major difference were extremely-far-fetched-for-the-time things like BGAAWC/FACT, Outlaw Shark, NTDS-fixes, IBS/TRAP, TENCAP efforts, Vector Logic/DLI/Chainsaw, SOSUS and FOSIF/FOSIC.
That's what the USN was dealing with in the 70s, but hey Reagan reactivated some old boats, 600 ship navy right. The USN always had the short end of the stick, the things that made a bigger difference were things people couldn't write about at the time.

What is Atlantic Bastion and will it work?

I'm delighted that my first report for the Foreign Policy Research Institute is now out - covering the goal, the tech, the threat, and the history (for all you SOSUS nerds).

NATO and the US can hear a whale fart 5,000 miles away. We have had most of the ocean bugged since the mid 1950s. They caught this ship very quickly after the incident. The problem lies in the fact it's commercial ships doing it, often under non Russian flags.

#MosaicMonday takes us to the #CapitolineMuseums in #Rome to find the most famous #mosaic in history, a copy of a work in #Pergamon by the mosaicist #Sosus, found at #VillaAdriana in 1737. It had many copies subsequently, and became a kind of shorthand for #classical taste. #AncientBluesky 🏺

I read Nuclear War: A Scenario shortly after it came out and found myself totally baffled by what people saw in it. The scenario is like Call Of Duty game level fantastical - NK has magic SOSUS evading subs and uses them to launch Exactly Two missiles, one at a random power plant in CA.
If youre inclined to give any credence to Annie Jacobsen's Nuclear War or Biological War books, be aware "Roswell 1947 was Stalin sending Mengele-mutants to scare America" is literally something she claims in her earlier Area 51 book
anyway the """fact based""" argument in this piece of shit is a ~bioengineered~ whatever that somehow kills literally everyone in the US in a week lmfao

not sure if this better or worse than genetically modified mengele kids doing Roswell for stalin

Pretty sure every bubblehead on the planet figured that out about 2 seconds after they played the SOSUS sounds. No ST's needed for interpretation on that one.

Something seems fishy for #MosaicMonday! This mosaic emblema depicts eight fish, two squid/cuttlefish, and an eel. An example of the delights of the sea that were destined for the plates of an elite dinner party.

Russia might be operating a network of sonar systems in the Barents Sea designed to detect submarines. The Harmony Network appears to be an equivalent of the famous SOSUS network

Some days only doves will do.

Here drinking from lion-footed golden basin.
Emblema extracted in 1885 from floor of eponymous House of the Doves in Pompeii.
Modelled on C2 BC mosaic in Hadrian's Villa by Sosus of Pergamon that was admired by Pliny.

When I was living in Rome, I saw some wonderful examples of 19th-c. mosaic "paintings", as well as ancient, the prime example being the superb 2nd c. Dove Mosaic at the Capitoline Museum (their 📷), thought by some to have graced Hadrian's villa & to be a Roman interpretation of Sosus of Pergamon.

One of my favorite mosaics. Very complex and fairly damaged, but still wonderful. As you allude above, Pliny mentions the work of Sosus of Pergamon, particularly the birds on the edge of a dinking bowl.

This isn’t a fresco painting as might first appear, but a sophisticated mosaic made from thousands of tiny tiles, from the floor of Hadrian’s Villa, Tivoli. Depicting four doves on rim of large gilt bronze basin, & based on design by Sosus of Permagon (2nd century, Capitoline Museum)
