First of all, I have to express my admiration for the scientific expertise, highest scientific integrity standards of Kate Calvin. She is amongst the brightest scientists I have met along the course of the IPCC AR6, with a leading role in the IPCC SRCCL report and IPCC Synthesis report.

It’s about rapidly reducing carbon emissions, increasing biodiversity and introducing healthier, sustainable diets on a liveable planet.

Not zero ruminant but certainly much reduced. An approach advocated by the IPCC, the UN etc.

Hi from the land sector, which is sometimes forgotten in climate change discussions but whose emissions account for 1/4 of total human GHG emissions & whose emissions have steadily risen for 50+ years (agriculture) or varied between 4-6 billion tons CO2 for 50+ years (land-use change) (IPCC 2019). 🧪

Technical mitigation potential of changing diets by 2050 according to a range of scenarios examined in the literature. Estimates indicate technical potential only and include additional effects of carbon sequestration from land-sparing. Data without error bars are from one study only. To trigger positive tipping points that help eliminate the 25% of greenhouse gas emissions linked to food, farming, and deforestation, we call on policymakers to adopt trade policies that catalyse sustainable commodity production and to shift public money from the livestock sector to plant-based proteins. This will also help limit the risk of tipping points in the biosphere – including dieback of the Amazon rainforest – and can liberate land for regenerating nature.

Reducing peatland drainage and burning could mitigate up to 1.22 Gt CO2-eq annually by 2050, according to IPCC. While vulnerable to climate change, some peatlands show remarkable resilience - their global carbon sink might even increase slightly until 2100. (8/8)
