Mind you, my mother-in-law (who worked as a primary school teacher in Suffolk) intensively studied Russian with SSEES in the late 80s and was in Russia at the time of the August Coup, and she has never given a clear reason for any of this 🤔

It seems very sad to me that Baltic Studies is a field that barely exists in the UK. There are language courses run by SSEES (and its two Baltic professorships) and Glasgow's Baltic Research Unit (focussed on international relations and modern history), but that's about it

In a weird convergence, the builders renovating the toilets in the basement of the SSEES library, next to the Baltic collection, are Lithuanians. I just stunned them with "Labas" (hello in Lithuanian)
