I would give anything for HTML includes 😭
I help non-tech people build websites at our local IndieWebClub. They don't have any trouble learning a bit of HTML and CSS, but having to set up SSGs just to get common navigation/footers/etc. really stumps them.

The general consensus is that SSGs are not build systems. That sounds weird, but there's a technical (even mathematical) definition of a build systems, and most SSGs like Zola and Hugo... aren't.

SSGs tend to be better if you want something for free but there's a lot of web-dev shit that you may or may not want to do. If you've got that mindset, go ahead, otherwise go look at WordPress.

The cool thing about SSGs is your work isn't wasted. You get to peal apart the thing you built and put it into a little factorio factory that does stuff for you. It rules.

Peak check-out was when a huge chunk of the Troop popped hot for cocaine, even Sgts and SSGs.
I ETS'd a week after that, and was glad for it. Glad to stop getting calls at 6 am on a sunday to get punished because I wasnt spending my time ensuring some SSG wasnt snorting coke and beating his kids.

why SSGs and not something like WP? neocities only supports static hosting, no PHP, no Lua, no serverside code. none of 'at, so SSGs will handle the everything based on your templates and flatten it

I'd be worried about SLCMs from the new generation of SSGNs and SSGs, plus submarine and UUV laid sea mines though. Maybe raids from mainland-based H-20s? Plus whatever intercontinental range conventional missiles they currently have under development.

recent events in the rubysphere are pushing me to take a second look at jekyll alternatives (have to do a lot of site rework anyway, might as well)
that being said, I don't think many other SSGs could replicate something like my site, at least not with a *ton* more setup than what jekyll needed
