I had to watch The Pitt to learn about Freedom House Ambulance Service, and reading the Wikipedia article enraged me. My city! A Pitt physician! And I never knew about it!! Why do I know about Salk and Starzl and not FHAS?

Qwhyte suspect.

In surgery, research usw.😐

LOL, my first grant in 2017 was for $33k a year. It took considerable more than 4 pages to apply for. This is from "The Puzzle People" by Thomas Starzl, a book I must re-read soon.
If you don't know who Thomas Starzl was, he's a fascinating character.

I'll be speaking Sunday at the American Transplant Congress, on kidney exchange. It will be hard to squeeze in all the recent developments in my half hour, including current controversies.

RF Starzl was born on this day, so here's some magazine artwork (Artist: Frank R Paul, HW Wesso, HW Wesso and Leo Morey). Going by the story's interior illustration, the 1st image illustrates Starz's story "Out of the Sub-Universe". The 2nd is for "Madness of the Dust", 4th for "The Globoid Terror":

1967- OTD at the University of Colorado Med Ctr, Dr. Tom Starzl performed the first successful liver transplant in a child. Starzl later moved on to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Ctr transforming it into a premier transplant center. A true medical giant!🎉⚕️👏🏻

Starzl's name is, not surprisingly, all over Pitt's campus including the organ transplant center. There's a statue of him on a bench near the Cathedral of Learning sponsored by his wife:

Some 20 years ago (or more), I interviewed Tom Starzl at his office at the U of Pitt about this strange concept, "immune tolerance" for an article for @wired.com

Starzl, a transplant pioneer, was convinced this was possible.
