If I knew the answer to "how do we get more women into <insert STEM related thing here>" I'd have made my fortune selling the idea*.

So just because I AM a woman in STEM pls stop asking.

*actually I do have an idea but it involves dismantling the patriarchy and no one is willing to hear that

Apprenticeships and similar programs are common in Europe. Why is the US only spending a tiny percentage of education budgets on high school technical training? Read what @uftnyc.bsky.social President Michael Mulgrew and I have to say via @Newsweek.com

Younger daughter & I found these fossilised crinoid rock stars (segments of the ‘stem’ of Jurassic feather stars/sea lilies, related to starfish & sea urchins) in the gravel on the edge of a lake nr Peterborough UK. She used them to make an ammonite:

these are closely related logically consistent positions--both CSAM (/apologism) and persecution of trans children stem from a sense of entitlement over children's bodies & a drive to shape & mold children according to adult desires & power
Kind of wild that the New York Times has more sympathy for an influencer who posted child porn than it does for trans children who want to be left alone.

The word 'fairy' is related to 'infantry' and 'professor'.

And that's not all: these words are also related to 'fate', 'fatal', 'fame', 'fable', and 'to confess'.

They all come from Latin words derived from a stem meaning "to speak".

You seem to be pretty well informed and I like that but I absolutely keep it in the back of my head that your actual area of formal expertise is Catholicism

The word ‘queen’ is distantly related to ‘gynaecology’ and ‘misogyny’.

It’s also related to Norwegian ‘kone’ and ‘kvinne’, but they’re not full cognates.

While ‘queen’ comes from Germanic *kwēniz (wife), ‘kone’ and ‘kvinne’ stem from *kwenōn (woman), which in English became ‘quean’ (ho).

iirc the USSR for instance viewed history, philosophy, & economics as related disciplines in their university systems.

think about how siloed off STEM is from other disciplines in the US. that’s an ideological decision.

Not directly related, but I just saw this stem-winder of a stump speech by James Talarico:
James Talarico: 50 years ago, a corporate lawyer named Lewis Powell circulated a memo around DC — a blueprint for how corporations could amass political power, reverse the gains of the Great Society and the New Deal, and rig the system for themselves.

And it worked.

I will also point out that desantis and other governors are carving out stem into possible security related fields and then banning some international students from those fields
Humanities programs enrollments are massively down, liberal arts schools that stressed innovative and challenging wide-spanning thinking are dying all around us, and fewer and fewer humanities professor jobs exist.

We’re witnessing a dangerous narrowing of the American mind.
