Machine surprise can be defined through knowledge gain, not just rarity. A framework called Mutual Information Surprise could eventually help autonomous systems decide when to reassess. doi.org/hck72t
Can a machine or AI agent be surprised? Helping autonomous systems respond to the unexpected
Let's say you ask ChatGPT a question that stumps it, or a Waymo vehicle encounters something unusual in the road, or an autonomous factory faces an unexpected disruption.

New/updated cricket laws.. this one is interesting.

Does it basically mean a bowler can't run a batsman out by just flicking the ball on to the stumps? They have to have control over it!?

Tories leaning into their boomer vote - the ones who did well by Thatcher & think anyone younger than them has ‘had it too easy’, ignoring that they got the low hanging fruit while their grandkids get savagely hacked & lifeless stumps.

So according to the Tories, it's wrong to means-test benefits for boomers... but totally fine to do so for their adult children children.

The length of a cricket pitch (i.e. the distance between the middle stumps of the two wickets) is 22 yards and the distance from middle stump to the square leg boundary is 85 yards.
Assuming the field is an ellipse with the middle stumps at each focus, determine the area of the playing surface.

I'm very familiar with the Ingalls dam area. On the Wisconsin side of the river there, you can see tree stumps by the boat landing that burned down during the Peshtigo Fire. I've fished the Cedar and the Ford Rivers but the mighty Menominee River is my favorite.

Amber chaos grips Ukraine as mafia‑style operators strip land, regulators sidelined by wartime crisis
RIVNE (Ukraine), Oct 1 — Illegal amber mining has blighted the landscape in Rivne, northwest Ukraine, leaving just tree stumps, small bushes and swampy puddles deep in the coniferous forest. Mafia-style groups flushed out chunks of the golden fossilised resin for years, paying little regard to the environment, fuelling a black market industry that devastated thousands of hectares. Amber is used to make jewellery and other products, which are hugely sought after in China. Ukraine started regulating the industry just a few years before Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. But stretched for resources during a war that has become the biggest in Europe since World War II, industry figures now warn that fragile progress in cleaning up the lucrative sector is being wasted. Unregistered — so-called “grey” — amber is flooding the market, environmental inspections have been suspended and firms are relying on private security groups, armed with weapons siphoned from the front, to protect their sites. “There are many dishonest operators, a very, very large percentage of dishonest subsoil users,” Oleg Bogelsky, co-owner of Ukraine’s Amber Galbin group, a mining company with operations in Rivne, told AFP. He estimated about 60 to 70 per cent of all amber...
