Indigenous actor Mark Coles Smith was born in Kalgoorlie and has Sturt desert peas as his totem. He explains that they are called Malu Kuru Kuru. Kangaroo Eyes. A Western Desert name for them. The eyes of the flower see in all directions.

I found plenty of sturt desert peas. Hard to miss, really. They were growing right beside the highway in some spots.

While I was admiring the Sturt desert peas today, I could hear budgies, so I went off to investigate. I was pleased to find these charming little parrots in the big trees nearby.

We had heard about the amazing display of Sturt desert peas near Blinman, so Rhonda and I went to find them. There were 18 rough creek crossings from Blinman to the wildflowers - but totally worth it. A big day!

The Sturt desert peas east of Blinman were so popular that there was a traffic jam in the carpark*

For those curious about road conditions up north, this is a short segment east of Blinman. There were 18 creek crossings between Blinman and the Sturt desert peas (36 if you count the return). They weren't bad but it was tiring and I was glad I had a 4WD.
