A very hot field trip with the Lincs Flora Group to Swinstead Valley yesterday - some great limestone grassland with Purple Milk-vetch, Horseshoe Vetch and Crested Hair-grass, plus a strong population of Stinking Chamomile in an arable field headland...

Born #OTD in 1880, the English composer & pianist, Felix Swinstead. His late Cello Sonata is thought to date from the 1950s (he died in 1959) & was found among the possessions of his friends the pianists Vivian Langrish & his wife Ruth Harte. open.spotify.com/track/5pFsS0... #britsymphyear

On 08 Feb 1809 Brownlow Bertie 5th Duke Ancaster and Kesteven died aged 79 without male issue at Grimsthorpe, South Kesteven, Lincolnshire. His Dukedom extinct.
He was buried at St Mary's Church, Swinstead on 17 Feb 1809.

*Loud whisper* Sir. Arthur Conan Doyle was friends with Victorian LGBTQ+ Rights activist George Cecil Ives, and based the bar that Watson and Stamford first met in on a bar where gay men met up. Ives talked about it.
