I know someone at one of the UC ITSs was using SWITRS data to see how many more collisions were on streets with billboards vs other streets with similar traffic counts, and quantify the fiscal impact of these billboards. It was probably someone’s PhD dissertation so should be published eventually.

Trying to compare apples to apples as much as possible, let's look at 26 months of data in SWITRS, the statewide crash database.
We need to use 11/2021-12/2023 because there is a data lag, so it's not a perfect match with the bike data, but close enough.

As someone who looks into cyclist- and pedestrian-involved crashes a lot, I'm thrilled California has released a new open data platform for this data. What was SWITRS is now the California Crash Reporting System (CCRS). At first glance it looks great! data.ca.gov/dataset/ccrs
Unfortunately, the County database doesn't allow you to segment by teens older than 15 (the next bucket is an unhelpful 16-39), but SWITRS does.
And when you look at you add in just the ages of 16-19 (i.e. young drivers), things get very grim very fast.

One example of how SWITRS has helped: critics were claiming a protected bike lane project pitted a stereotype of young cyclists versus senior residents (www.berkeleyside.org/2022/05/05/o...). I was able to show the people who needed protection were actually median age 69. That changed the debate.

In my former job, I compiled that data for collisions on roadways. Incredibly rare. The only place this data is not collected in Californias SWITRS database is on off road paths.
Yeah, drivers are so regulated and trustworthy that they kill and seriously injure thousands of people each year.
The reason you don't hear much about cyclists seriously injuring and killing pedestrians is because it's so incredibly rare.

Checked again -- CCRS now has some BPD data including some 2025 crashes. However, there are some crashes missing from 2024 for Berkeley. And there are some weird things about the vehicle types -- CCRS seems not to be able to indicate Bus, Truck, eBike, eScotter, or eSkateboard. SWITRS had those.
