[logo: SWOPTAS.] Please join is SLR a screening of their new film ‘High Heels’, an exclusive performance of ‘Reality Theatre’, followed by a group discussion led by members of Empower. Friday 24th July, 5-9pm. Good Grief Studios, 62 Argyle Street, Hobart. Free registration for sex workers, you can use a preferred name. Ticket types will not be displayed and all registration information will be kept strictly confidential. Ally tickets are $15.

«Today is International Whores' Day» On 2 June 1975, sex workers occupied Saint-Nizier Church in Lyon, France to demand an end to police oppression. Today we honour their bravery and advocacy for sex worker rights. ‣ How it started… For eight days, sex workers occupied Saint-Nizir Church in Lyon. They organised collectively, hanging banners and creating chants, and spoke directly to the press. Refusing to leave, they protested police oppression, harassment, arrests, fines, and the ongoing threat of losing custody of their children. Many also brought their children with them. On the 10th of June, the protesters were forcibly removed by the police. But the occupation sparked a global movement for sex worker rights. So on this day, we honour the Lyon occupation and celebrate all the whores who occupy, protest and resist. ‣ How it's going… THE MESSAGE IS THE SAME, BUT WE HAVE GOTTEN LOUDER. Sex workers still deserve to work without police harassment and we deserve to be protected from violence. We still deserve to work safely, and to have our dignity and rights recognised. Sex workers in so-called Australia have fronted major sex workers rights victories, including achieving decriminalisation in NSW, QLD, NT and VIC. We continue to fight for decriminalisation so safety, labour rights and autonomy are protected. Our power has always come from collective action, solidarity and courage. None of us are free until all of us are. International Whores' Day reminds us the struggle continues, and that sex workers everywhere deserve dignity and safety.

«Who Are Empower?» Part 2: Art and Community. ‣ Art as activism. Advocacy has always gone hand in hand with creativity at Empower. Alongside lobbying, campaigning, and protesting for sex workers rights, Empower has used film, theatre, exhibitions, publications, and performance to challenge stigma and reshape public conversations. Some of Empower's projects over the years, before recent projects like ‘High Heels’ (2026) and ‘Reality Theatre’ (2017–present), Empower produced short films such as ‘Last Condom in Siam’ (2015) and ‘Last Rescue in Siam’ (2012). [Empower also] organised sex work exhibitions [such as] ‘Yet, still we dance! Sex workers of ASEAN art exhibition’ (Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, April 2013); published books and newsletters; and even opened a sex work museum in Bangkok, showcasing Thailand's sex worker history and archived from the past 40 years. «Who Are Empower?» Part 1: History and Advocacy. Founded in 1984, Empower is southeast Asia's oldest sex worker organisation. More than 50000 sex workers have participated in Empower over the past four decades. Together, they advocate for sex workers' rights to education, healthcare, justice, and political participation. [logo: SWOP TAS.] ‣ It began with skill-sharing. Empower began in Patpong, Bangkok, when sex workers came together to learn English, share skills, and support one another. Peer-led safer sex education became a key part of the organisation's work, creating a space where sex workers could access trusted information and build community. Over time, the Empower centre grew into a hub or organising, computer classes, exercise, cooking, and friendship. Recognising that formal education was often inaccessible for sex workers, Empower expanded its educational programs. In 2011, it was officially recognised by Thailand's Department of Education. “We are sex workers. We work using our brains and we are experts on ourselves. Our profession gives us and income, we are proud, we have friends and care for each other and work, and we should be given the same rights as other people in society.” — Honey Bee, Empower. ‣ Their expertise is recognised internationally. Empower is regularly consulted by international organisations for their expertise on sex worker rights and public health. Their work has also been recognised with awards from Thailand's National Human Rights Commission, the United Nations Development Programme, and the United Nations Population Fund. As part of the global sex worker movement, Empower continues to fight for sex worker rights. Earlier this year, Empower submitted the Sex Worker Protection Bill to the Thai Parliament with more than 11000 public signatures. Empower now operates across Thailand with diverse communities in Chiang Mai, Bangkok and Udon Thani.
