The discussion traces the evolutionary arc of Jewish messianic schisms—from Sabbateanism (Sabbatai Zevi) and Frankism (Jacob Frank) to Modern/Open Orthodoxy—examining their socio-political impacts, elite networks, and institutional shadow dynamics.

I was seeing recently the idea that Sabbateanism was a grassroots Jewish working class revolt against the establishment, although cults rarely turn out that way, and perhaps the fact the most prominent anti-Sabbatean, Jacob Sasportas, became England's first Chief Rabbi, lends this notion support.

That said: actual artists do make mistakes, or maybe whoever scanned and trimmed the selection made a mistake. Could have been including a bit that looks like a finger or ‘tidying’ something they thought was a finger into one.

Huh. At 2:29 the portrait of Nathan of Gaza (dude on the right) has 6 digits (or five fingers and one thumb, for the pedants) on their raised hand.
But like, 2021? Was regurgitative AI around then? (generative AI, so-called)

She was also a leading expert on Sabbateanism, a messianic movement of the mid 17th c and a major spiritual upheaval in Jewish diasporic history... Ada was particularly interested in the role of women in this antinomian movement.

Idk I think it's just Kabbala was very big in Jewish communities in Palestine at the time, and Sabbateanism was a messianic movement so that obviously appealed to people already there? Maybe there was a weaker rabbinic authority in the community bc it's not one of the four "holy cities"? Idk really

Thinking of converting to a religion? Consult my Religous Identity Matching Service. We offer a wide range of pairings from hard core cults to quasi-religious services organizations...and everything in between! We just added pickleball leagues and Sabbateanism.

I am a forever fan of Sabbateanism, the deeply-unhinged snap crisis that was like one of the biggest headaches in Judaism for hundreds of years and ironically might have spurred modern Judaism. There is so much happening in one year but the centrality of women is the most fascinating bit.
