New Westminster–Burnaby–Maillardville NDP and I stand in solidarity w/ #BCNurses. They have sacrificed so much 2 care 4 those who are ill, including risking their lives during the COVID-19 pandemic. They deserve #fairwages and #safeworking conditions. #BCNursesUnion

This is really dumb. Trains release so much crud the panels would be filthy very quickly; and the safeworking requirements on active railway tracks would make installation and maintenance a nightmare.

I think he is safeworking idk

Today's historic pic: The Cooma-bound Canberra Monaro Express formed of a 7-car DEB set headed by power car PF908 with PF901 at rear, slows for a safeworking stop at Royalla, NSW, December 12 1985. Power car 908 was withdrawn just 4 weeks afterwards after having been destroyed by fire near Dombarton

Driver training for the Byford extension begins on Monday, 21st July 2025.

The extension is probably going to open around November.

British rolling stock is not designed for north american style full-contact safeworking, there's a reason your trains are so heavy.

The same train just north of Michelago then into a staff exchange stop at the closed station at Williamsdale.

The safeworking is probably the real killer irrespective of the electrical problems. It's not easy to get trains talking two (or more) different styles of ATO/ATP. The only example I know is Crossrail, and I know that was a nightmare.

I love universal railway safeworking protocols (secret signalnerd 😏)

in the march 2025 issue of the american model railroader magazine there is an article about electric staffs (train safeworking equipment) that references sydney trains!

I worked briefly for the safeworking section of NSW railways (oh god). A shunter unloading a grain truck hit the overhead wire with his head. His head did what the possum did.
Remember the Triple J exploding head shirts? He was wearing one of those at the time. Triple J in stereo ...

Today’s historic pic: A lower quadrant semaphore home signal shows a proceed aspect for the down Canberra Monaro Express to enter Canberra station, Kingston ACT, September 8 1985. 44228 sits in a siding with the Southern Highlands Express, and a set of ARHS(ACT) end platform cars is stabled at right

Today’s historic pic: EMD-engined branchline loco 4910 running a 3-day LVR tour at Gwabegar, NSW, January 30 1983. Note the station name scrawled on the platform coping. Gwabegar, 603km from Sydney at the terminus of a 432km long branch line, has seen no trains since about 2005.

Today's historic pic: The crew of the northbound Cooma Mail access the unmanned signalbox to perform safeworking and shunting after having crossed the southbound Canberra Monaro Express at Farrer Loop on the single track section between Bungendore and Queanbeyan, NSW, December 14 1985.

The levers controlled points and signals. At right is an electric staff instrument linked with the adjacent stations to confirm the track was clear. Note the metal staves in the safeworking instrument; just one could be released at a time, and trains could proceed only when in possession of a staff.

Whilst Farrer was never a passenger station, trains did stop to exchange safeworking staffs, and it was a regularly scheduled crossing place for trains - including the up Cooma Mail and Down Canberra Monaro as seen here. Farrer was also a common destination for the ARHS ACT Division's out and […]

A museum I use to be involved with, but left due to their stance “Women didn’t drive in the 50’s so you can’t do it.”, despite 20y experience, has had another issue.
Male driver with multiple safeworking breaches, but allowed to continue, because “He’s a good bloke.”
But yeah, women are the problem.

Since then, the manual signalling and safeworking systems on the main line have been replaced with more modern centrally controlled systems and the signal box is now no longer used.

Whilst there are still two tracks through here and express trains pass through on both lines, platform 2, from […]
