Saidan: Fangdriller: Scars Beneath Memories Wrist (Avantgarde Music, 2026) [Dark Metals] The reason metal is the most conventional rock music is that any record diverting slighly from microgenre creates confusion or pushes it into a new microgenre. B+

Saidan breaking the five star scale is crazy, but it's a good album.
I've definitely had the Cartilage release on my radar and will likely grab it on the next bandcamp shopping spree.

My partner: The new Sigh album is good
Me: (misheard as Saidan) I didn't think you were really into them
Partner: the Japanese black metal band?
Me: uhh, you know they're not actually Japanese..?
(For context Saidan is a weeby black metal band from Nashville. Sigh is very much a Japanese band)

Review: Saidan – Fangdriller: Scars Beneath Memory’s Wrist
Review by Sandre the Giant Released: 19th June 2026 If you wanted me to guess where Japan-inspired horror black metal duo Saidan were from, I’d have guessed a thousand places before Nashville…

Though the album on the whole has a dearth of excitement or impact, with the latter half of Ethereal Blood, Saidan seems to have struck gold. Just past the two minute mark a positively outstanding riff kicks in, and the song allows itself to ride it all the way to completion.

Day 244
Saidan - Fangdriller: Scars Beneath Memory's Wrist
Yet another example of black metal being "...better as an ingredient than it is as a genre on its own". Saidan go full melodic Black Metal, but it borrows lots of its melodic theming from Japanese music. Ends up sounding really cool!
⭐⭐⭐⭐

There are, uh, a LOT of shows I’ve bought tickets for and skipped.
Depeche Mode (it was my birthday, too)
MCR (on their Three Bullets tour, mom wouldn’t let me go >:( )

Saidan (this month — I was depressed lol)
Angine de Poitrine (upcoming — I’ll be in Japan 😭)

How about this? Best concerts that you ALMOST got to see but DIDN’T.
Include reasons if you like:
Rolling Stones (play rehearsal)
Johnny Cash (I dallied)
R.E.M. (play performance)
Nirvana (canceled, college declined to pay requested $500 appearance fee)
