Sam Fender has recorded a cover of The Rolling Stones’ classic song ‘You Can’t Always Get What You Want’ for the 2026 John Lewis Christmas advert, continuing the department store’s tradition of commissioning well-known artists to provide soundtracks for its festive campaigns. Originally released in 1969 on the Stones’ album ‘Let It Bleed’, the song has been reworked by the South Shields musician, who performs alongside the choir from John Spence Community High School in North Shields, his former school, and brass musicians from the Easington Colliery Band. The advert stars Dame Kristin Scott Thomas, the BAFTA and Olivier Award-winning actress, as a grandmother searching for the perfect presents for her grandchildren. The campaign follows previous John Lewis Christmas adverts featuring artists including Andrea Bocelli, Richard Ashcroft, Lily Allen, Aurora, Lola Young and Tom Odell. Last year’s soundtrack featured Alison Limerick’s ‘Where Love Lives’, which gradually developed into a piano-led version performed by Labrinth. Fender described the opportunity to reinterpret the Rolling Stones’ song as a privilege, highlighting the involvement of children from his former school and the brass section arranged with the Easington Colliery Band. The cover has also received approval from Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger, who said he was a fan of Fender’s work and believed the musician had done a great job with the recording. The single will be released on 7-inch vinyl and CD, backed with Fender’s 2020 cover of Lindisfarne’s ‘Winter Song’, which is receiving its first physical release. All net profits from sales through Fender’s official online store will go to Teenage Cancer Trust. Meanwhile, profits from copies sold through John Lewis stores will be donated to Action for Children, a charity supporting people who have grown up in care. The release comes as Fender prepares for his UK and Ireland ‘Proper Massive’ stadium tour in 2027, which has already seen additional dates added following strong demand. The Mercury Prize-winning musician has also hinted that a new album is in the works, while speculation continues about a possible headline appearance at Glastonbury Festival 2027.
