#Samalas
Oh and you've probably not heard of Samalas(the volcano) or Pamatan(the kingdom) but you have almost certainly heard of what Samalas did to our planet- it's called the Little ice Age

Remember Samalas? Probably not but your genetic code does

This is correct and also one of the main theories about the end of the Bronze Age civilisations and as a fun aside to give you context, the eruption of Samalas was at least an order of magnitude greater than Santorini.
The ancient minoan civilization was essentially wiped out by the island of Thera, or Santorini, exploding in a gargantuan eruption.

This is most likely what Plato referenced when he developed the story of Atlantis, and is a possible interpretation for the 10 biblical plagues of Egypt as well.
Still can't get over how there's a whole civilization with a capital city at least as big as Pompeii buried deep under miles of volcanic rock from the biggest eruption in like 10,000 years on Lombok in Indonesia and all we know about them is that they existed till they were destroyed

"The history of Pamatan and the 1257 eruption of Samalas is recorded in the Babad Lombok, a compilation of historical writings and possibly oral tradition written in the Old Javanese language on palm leaves" - whoa

Samalas
Tambora
Krakatau

What is it with Indonesia and quasi-apocalyptic volcanic eruptions?

I know it's on the Pacific Ring of Fire, but nowhere else seems to have quite that oomph, yanno?

Up now (posting about this late, sorry, baby woke up) is @nameshiv.bsky.social talking about Samalas, The Pompeii of Indonesia! A topic I knew nothing about and it’s very interesting

It can't be Medieval History, since climate changes characterized the major transformations of that millennium (6th-century Late Antique Little Ice Age; Medieval Climate Anomaly; various globally impactful volcanic eruptions, incl. Samalas [1257], onset of late medieval/early modern Little Ice Age).

Lombok volcano explosion in 1257 ejected 40 cubic km of rock, contributed to Little Ice Age "The glacier advances triggered by the Samalas eruption are documented on Baffin Island, a change in Arctic Canada from a warm climate phase to a colder one coincides"

So why am I, a medical historian, reading about volcanoes & eclipses & sudden global cooling? Because in 1258, the year after the Samalas eruption in Indonesia, we also have a sequence of epidemic episodes. Wrote about this in 2020: academic.oup.com/ahr/article/.... More coming soon. #MedievalSky

the one that breaks my brain is ppl lived through Mt Samalas and recorded it like yeah there's a civilisation and city capital bigger than pompei you never heard of buried under 12 km of rock on that island

So cool. I discovered last night that there's a whole bunch of Italian scholars who are already engaging w/ the question of the effects of the #Samalas eruption & consequent climate shifts from 1257-60. #ClimateHistory #MedievalSky

It took a while to realize where the 1258 eruption even was located.
Samalas was about 10x the size of the 1991 Pinatubo eruption

If you're interested in my previous posts on the 1257 CE Samalas eruption, just do a keyword search for "Samalas" in the Search field.
I'm so intrigued that people are slowly noticing this post from March. If you're intrigued to learn more about the Samalas eruption, & why it's looking more & more like a turning point in #GlobalHistory, I have a list of studies under the "Climate" heading at: docs.google.com/document/d/1... 🧪🌋

What would we be looking at/looking for to document evolutionary changes caused by a volcanic jolt as big as Samalas was in 1257?
