When I was in Samarra, Iraq, we put snipers on the spiral minaret to overwatch routes in and out of the city. This was to deter and prevent emplacement of IEDs and other hostile acts.
We also tried launching Raven drones from the minaret. That was no more useful than launching them from elsewhere.
