Indeed. One of the best (and earlier) examples of this technique is the CRISTO VELATO in Napoli, completed in 1753 by sculptor Giuseppe Sanmartino, who carved this out of one single block of marble. When I saw it in person the first time totally blew my mind. I mean, look at this: it’s all marble!
