CT scan imagery of one of the earliest known monocot flowers, Tomlinsoniella from the Cretaceous Dakota Sandstone (about 100 million years old) of Kansas, preserved as a mold (a three-dimensional void in the rock, preserving the external morphology of the flower). Above are three virtual sections through the encasing sandstone; the first section is longitudinal, showing pedicel, bracts, sepals, petals, and two of the three carpels. To its right are cross sections, one near the apex intercepting three styles and three petal tips, one close to the equator, showing three separate carpels surrounded by 6 stamens and three petals. The rock is from the Silurian period, back when we were under a tropical sea. The very well defined layers are from the Dog Head formation, and it cap off a layer of less defined sandstone. You can find fossils of snails, nautilus and other invertebrates in the limestone.
