Summerday '75. A 16-year-old girl carrying a Silvertone🎸took 4 buses from Canoga Park to Huntington Beach. At the door she was greeted by another 16-year-old. The 2 strangers climbed to the above-garage recroom. Sandy sat down at her red Pearl🥁set. Joan plugged in her🎸

Cherry Bomb—The Runaways
Lots of music birthdays today, but I’ll go with Runaways drummer Sandy West. No better excuse to listen to this trashy, sassy glam-punk anthem. 🍒💣

The Runaways, “The Runaways” - gatefold, Mercury - 1976.
Debut album. Vintage press from Circus, Creem, & Crawdaddy. Probably a bit problematic by today’s standards.

He knew both drummer Sandy West and guitarist Joan Jett, got them all together and they hit it off. Lita Ford joined after auditioning and Cherie Currie was recruited as the frontwoman after Kim and Joan spotted her at the Sugar Shack in Hollywood. Jackie Fox joined on bass right after "Cherrie Bomb," their breakout hit, went crazy and there you had the classic Runaways line-up.

Sandy West met Joan Jett and changed the world. In 1975 .. at just 15 years old .. Sandy met producer Kim Fowley who arranged a meeting with Joan. They hit it off famously and together they formed a band -- later adding Lita Ford, Cherie Currie and Jackie Fox -- the Queens of Noise, The Runaways.
