My mum's people, the Sámi of Sápmi, are the indigenous people of northern Finland, Norway, Sweden and Russia. Lapland, if you like, which the Sámi don't. They've been wandering around between these four countries for millennia, minding their own business, moving with their livestock.

Finnish Sápmi well north of the Arctic circle, in the general vicinity of Äkäslompolo. the nearest "big" city would be Killilä. It's a place I dream of still. It can take most of a day to walk across it. That is possible in summer/fall because of a boardwalk (in Swedish, a "rosade" path.

Sámi people are from Sápmi which covers Norway, Sweden, Finland and small parts of Russia! So yeah, there's some overlap. But Finns were subject to a lot of abuse too, especially when it came to their language.

Iceland has reindeer, they were imported here in the 18th century and have become part of the ecosystem. And we use the name Sápmi now, not colonially imposed names 😊

My DNA test said that I've got 1% of Inuk heritage but apparently up this north, Sami heritage is labelled the same as the Inuk DNA. It's thus common for Finns to get Inuk DNA result when it's actually Samish.
So it looks like I have both Samish (Sapmi) and Karelian roots.
