Born in Philadelphia, Douglass devoted her life to teaching African American children when few opportunities for education existed. She also fought tirelessly for women’s rights and racial equality, working alongside leaders like Lucretia Mott and members of the Philadelphia Female Anti-Slavery Society. As one of the first African American women to teach science and anatomy, Douglass opened doors for generations of Black women in education and medicine.
