(Link in bio) The first student-staff assembly last Thursday was a historical moment for the University of Edinbugh. Nearly 1000 of us showed up to make sense together of what is going on and how affected we all are by the decisions made by Peter Mathieson and Kim Graham – the senior management – to cut 90 programmes and hundreds of jobs, forcing the union to call a 5-week strike to defend staff’ livelihood. Students testified about how the rise in student debt and the rent spiking in uni accommodation. International students talked about the sense of being treated like cash cows. Scottish students described the cultural erasure happening as programmes & courses related to Gaelic, Celtic and Scottish studies have been targeted for cuts. PhD students talked about the disappearing of tutorials and the massive cuts to tutors position that allowed them to survive. >90 programme closures announced after the start of term. Total lack of transparency and consultation. Peter Mathieson buying fancy buildings and paying himself £420k+ salary on the back of student debt and job cuts. The uni is wealthier than ever before. So WHY should the staff lose their jobs and the students get into more and more debt for less and less education?
