this is similar to how multiple calls to the same JS function will not “share” variable values

sayHello()

each of these calls will have its own `yourName` variable. if you *wanted* them to be aware of each other, you would have to lift that variable out of those functions

in that sense, a variable is a piece of state:

it is an ephemeral piece of state — the yourName variable “disappears” as soon as the sayHello function exits. by then it has fully served its purpose
